Where do I get codecs for Quicktime

Hi

First of all I am new to Mac so I am only just learning my way around. So apologies if I’ve missed anythingimportant out.

So I am trying to watch some video clips and I am assumingQuicktime is the player of choice for use on Mac. The problem is that if I tryand play these I just get the message “The document could not be opened. Arequired codec is not available”

The link does not help with this format.

The video is an Avi with a Xvid codec

I tried the same thing on my old PC and Quicktime comes upwith a message that is similar.

“Additional software is required for Quicktime to play thismedia. It may be available from the Quicktime components page”

This takes me to a page that gives me a codec but will onlywork on Mac 10.4 (?)

So have transferred it to my Mac but it doesn’t do anything.

Would be happy with media player suggestions or solution tothe above.

I must admit one reason I was convinced into getting a Macbook was becauseyou didn’t get these problems on them. Apparently.

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7), New Mac user.

You can play Xvid in QuickTime on a Mac by installing the free Perian codec which you can download from http://perian.org/

There is no specific Xvid codec for QuickTime for Windows however the 3ivX codec might play Xvid files. You can download the Windows 3ivX QuickTime component from here http://www.3ivx.com/technology/quicktime/index.html

You don't need the 3ivX component on the Mac as Perian should handle all your needs.

Are you using QuickTime Player 7 or X (aka. 10) to play the video? You can download and install QuickTime Player 7 from here http://support.apple.com/kb/ht3678 it is better able to handle 'old' style formats like 3ivX and Xvid (for which it still used Perian).

You could also try upgrading to 10.7.2 although I don't recall the changes listing issues like this.

Thanks for the reply and I have downloaded this but it still isnt working properly.😟But is better than before so we are getting somewhere.

It plays the video but without sound. But you can tell that there is sound still there as it plays for about half a second if you jump to any point. It also plays at 4x speed and above, which would give me a headache if i tried to watch it.
