10.6.8 + Safari 5.1 = freeze

Hi all. My partner has this problem on her MacBook Pro, which is newer than the one I'm running 10.7 on. Opening Safari led to an immediate freeze: no page would load. I reset Safari, I wiped preferences, I emptied the cache. I reinstalled the OS. Safari 5.0 worked fine, but upgrading to 5.1 reproduced the problem.

I'd resent paying to get 10.7 simply to fix this. Is there any fix available to allow her to install 5.1 (and subsequent releases) and keep running 10.6.8?

Third party Safari add ons are frequently responsible when Safari freezes or crashes.

Troubleshooting help here > Unsupported third-party add-ons may cause Safari to unexpectedly quit or have performance issues

Bear in mind, Apple is not responsible for updating third party add ons. The developer is.

The only way to reinstall Safari on Lion is to use Lion Recovery

I appreciate that. There were no third-party add-ons at all. I repeatedly reinstalled Lion, with the version of Safari on the disc, clicked 'software update' to install 5.1, and the problem was repeated.

No. The machine was factory fresh and had never been on the web either!

What happened to the conversation after Oct 13, 2011? I'm having the same problem on my MacBook 10.6.8, Safari 5.1, no add-ins, freezes entire computer & I have to use the power button to shut down.
