Why cant i get ios 5 for my 3rd gen 8gb?

Cause you actually have a 2G iPod and the highest iOS version that can be installed on it is 4.2.1. There was never an 8 GB 3G iPod Touch.

Yes I can't figure this out. I have the 8GB 3gen and it's giving me the same message. Apple website says "iOS 5 and iCloud work with iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPod touch (3rd and 4th generation), iPad, and iPad 2." So I hope someone is able to post here and help us out.

there was never a 8GB model in the 3rd generation. only 32 and 64GB models.

Has your back-cover been replaced with that of a 3rd gen ? Maybe someone has cheated you and sold you a 2nd gen as a 3rd gen.

However you have a 2nd and thus you cannot run or even install iOS5. The processor and graphics and memory wont handle it ( iOS5 needs alone 256MB to operate ) nor has the iOS drivers for your hardware ( wifi is different, graphics system is different ) .

you are obviously an idot. they sell 3G itouch in 8 gigs. My cousin bought one directly from the apple store. You really need to get your facts straight.

the ipod touch 2nd gens were never revised like the 32 and 64GB models were. they have the same hardware as they did when they were "2nd Gen". The only real 3rd Gen (not 3G) iPod Touch models are the 32GB and 64GB models.... BTW... the "3rd gen" 8GB models also had a problem getting iOS4... made them slow down and they are not able to multi-task because they do not have the processing power..... long story short: the "2nd Gen" and "3rd Gen" 8GB models are the SAME THING!

Here is a quote from Amazon cust support (I bought mine there).

"The NEWEST 8 GB touch on the market, which comes installed with iPhone OS 3.1 and was released in September 2009 along with the 3rd generation 32 GB and 64 GB models, is still being referred to as 2nd generation by Apple support even though Apple Marketing initially referred to it as 3rd generation."

On the back of the device if the model number is #A1288, it is the 2nd generation. The 3rd generation is #A1318.

The apple website also says the 3rd gen only came in 32 or 64GB.

Bummer, pretty much we got screwed in a marketing scam. However, Amazon is giving me a refund...and after having it for two years (they are great). So the only real option is to try to go that route. Most retailers won't go for it though.

There are no 3rd gen ipod touches.

Call Apple and ask or look an their website. It is a fact - no ipod touch 3rd gen in 8GB or 16 GB. they do not exist.
