First, you have to say WHERE you are to find Settings. Settings in What?

I just updateed to IOS 5 and thought I lost all my contacts. If you go into your settings menu Click on Mail, Contacts, Calendar tab. Scroll ALL THE WAY DOWN and import SIM Contacts. Wahh Laaa, they will appear.

    Hope this helps!!!

You need to turn off synching through the iCloud and synch through iTunes to your Outlook of Address Book however this will still leave you with linked/duplicate contact cards in your phone and your favorites contacts in the phone as well as all caller id photos etc. will be linked to the old contacts.  In order to get rid of those contacts what I did was added the simple change to the contacts I synched from the computer (I added an exclamation point to the notes sections).  Then synch to your iPhone through iTunes not through the iCloud, then search your iPhone for the first contact name you have in your list.  You will see this will bring up 2 contacts for the same person.  Select either contact then hit the back button.  You will then be in the contact list but you will see in this work around there will be 2 contacts listed for everyone.  Select the contact card and then delete it that does not have the added change so you can tell what is new and old.  This will leave you with the new contact cards and remove the corrupted/lost contacts.  You will lastly need to turn on the iCloud synch and either leave or remove those changes you made (like my exclamation points) from your new contacts.  This is a pain in the tail but the only way I was able to completely fix the issue.

    Good luck!

Here is what worked for me after trying different solutions from this post and others.

    1. Plug Iphone to Itunes and select sync with this phone over wifi then sync to apply

    2. Disconnect Iphone from Itunes and make sure you are able to sync on wifi

    3. On the left panel right click the Iphone Device and select restore from backup (still on wifi)

    4. Pick a date to restore and submit

This should begin the restoration process to a previous and retrieving all contact information. Hope this helps someone else.

Hopefully you've figured out how to fix your phone.  You could relax a bit on your posts, people are just trying to help you.

Settings is an Icon that is on your phone.  It controlls most things on your phone.  If you click on the settings icon (it is grey and has gears on the icon) you can scroll down to iCloud and change it or delete it as others have posted on this forum)

The contacts moved from iTunes to iCloud so if you log into iCloud from the computer with your apple id u will see all your contacts there and they will push to your phone

When I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5 I lost all my contacts.... I finally found out what to do to get them back.  Go to settings then iCloud and turn everything off in iCloud.  Gave me all my contacts back.

    iCloud YOU SUCK!!!

Upgraded IOS4.X to IOS5 on IPhone3GS and lost most of my 232 contacts, going into Settings>ICloud got back only 53 contacts which was years old.  So much for ICloud fix.  Tried the Import from SIM card fiix, nothing more than 53 that I already had.I did not have any contacts backed up on Google/Yahoo, no chance to restore them that way. Tried restarting phone by power off.   Frankly at the time I did not even know that during IOS upgrading a back was created.

Then I read this 'life saver' post by 'eatingconsciously'.  Whoever you are, THANK YOU SOOOOOO MUCH !!!!!  It worked on my 1st restore attempt from backup today time stamped just prior to IOS upgrade.

Here it is again, for anyone with same issue.  IT WORKS !!!!!  But I have not completed step 3.  Maybe I would backup again before doing it.

    1)  I restored my phone from a backup prior to the update.

    2)  During the intial setup screens, I selected to skip the Apple ID login, which is located in the bottom right-hand corner.  I also did not set up iCloud.

    3)  Once I was into the phone and my contacts were there, I then went into settings > iCloud > and signed into iCloud with my Apple ID.  I turned sync contacts on, then turned it off and chose "keep on iPhone."  I then exited the settings, waited a minute, then went back into iCloud settings and turned sync contact backs on and selected merge contacts.

Good Luck to IPhone users.  Sorry to say, ICloud failed me this time.

I syncs iPhone last night and the iOS 5 pretty much wiped my phone so I had to back up using an old data a week ago. It's not a huge loss but my phone could no longer sync with iTune without it telling me that the 'restoration process was interruped'. I couldn't get any of the new data onto my phone through iTune unless it insisted the restore process, which often ended up in error.

I need to use several programs on the phone on a daily basis, what could I do!?

This is the second iphone I've owned, the first was replaced by Apple, because it would sync with itunes but not back up.

Guess what the new phone didn't either! I spent hours on the phone with apple and they couldnt make it backup either, eventually saying it was a Micrsoft softwear problem.

So when I've updated the new softwear and I lost everything. It left me with nothing and no backup to collect information from!!!!!

However I have been able to restore some my contacts from my sim card, now I want to know about my lost photos, messages. Does anyone know how to resore them?

any help would be most appreciated.

Just restored my data after updating simply from using one of the older back ups (left side bar right click device and restore from back up)

Unfortunately dont have the last pics i made, but whatahell, at least contacts are there

It seems that the iTunes update to the latest (or something else not knowingly initiated by me) has wiped out all of the previous iPhone backups I had on the PC. When I now right click on the iPhone line on the left, it only shows me the backups I have taken AFTER I discovered that the upgrade to iOS 5 had lost all of my 740 contacts + started (for reasons unknown to me) NOT to sync some of the pictures to the same phone that had had them with iOS 4 OK...

My local operator (TeleFinland) has now adviced me of the following:

    - my phone was ordered (via internet) on 18Oct2010. I got the phone two days later in a box from post office.

    - I have contacted them via eMail about this current problem on 19Oct2011

-> thus the one year warranty is no longer and I'm on my own with this problem (with error 11 when restoring to factory settings)

This is NOT exactly in line of my thoughts of Apple and my (still strong) belief that this all was caused by a clitch or two in Apple SW guiding me to iOS 5 update... ???

    Great :-(
