I just switched from 4.3.3 to the iOS 5. All my contacts were wiped during the installation and restore and I can't find iMessage anywhere. Is this another App that I will need to download separately from the operating system? Any help is much appreciated.
EDIT: I figured out iMessage. But is there any way to retrieve all my contacts?!

Sync with outlook?
Restore them from the computer where you had been backing up your iPhone, or from the server (google, etc.) where you sync them.
Lost mine as well. Although my favourites are still there and the contact names are still against my text messages.
I don't sync them anywhere else either. They would be in the original backup. looks like I need to role back to IOS4, sync the contacts somewhere and re-upgrade to 5, then sync the contacts back.
I'll have to do that tomorrow I think as that's take a few hours.

I have exactly the same problem, got all my favourites and also against text messages, but no contacts! Surely there must be another way rather than reinstalling ios 4 and back to 5?!
Same thing happened to me as well. I can't even figure out how to downgrade to iOS4 and grab the old backup.
I had the same issue, I found if I went into settings, then Mail/Contacts/Calender, scrolled down to Import SIM Contacts. I found all my contacts back again.
Try it out and let me know

On AT&T, tried it, didn't make a bit of difference.
Go into your iphone settings>iCloud> change the "Contacts" switch to off. I had the same problem...favorites were there, text messages still had names attached but none in the Contacts list. This fixed it and all my contacts are now back on my iPhone and my iPad as well.
my contacts are there but the ability to add and edit is now gone after updating to iOS5
any help on this? anyone else have same issue?
Hate to say it, but that didn't work for me either.
I had th same issue. Right click on your phone, click restore from back up. It restored again and all my contacts came back. Hope it works for you
I had the same issue, fixed it by doing the following...
1. log into iCloud.com, verify your contacts are there.
2. open up your contacts app on your iPhone and hit the reload button on the top left corner. your contacts should populate after that.
This happened to me too. I fixed it by going into my text messeges and clicking on one of the ppl I knew was in my contacts then scrolling to the top and there was a button that said Contacts in the upper right. I clicked on it and then just eddid one of the fields saved and exited... All my contact were back magically.... hope this helps anyone with the same problem.
What I did was hooked phone back up to itunes and did a restore back up. When the phone restarted, I declined the icloud sign up up when the phone first re-starts. My contacts were all there. I then set up the icloud back up in the settings-icloud, did a back up and all is well now.
iOS 5 wiped all my contacts. Any help?
