iOS 5 insists on "Update Apple ID", but won't accept my e-mail address

I'm trying to update my iPhone 4 to iOS 5.

After the update, iOS 5 begins to ask a series of questions (would I like navigation services turned on, etc.)

Eventually it asks for my Apple ID and password. I enter those, and it accepts them.

Then it asks for my birthday. I enter that.

Then it show a screen that says "Update Apple ID: For your security, your Apple ID login must be an email address."

But my Apple ID / iTunes ID isn't an email address. If I enter the e-mail address associated with my iTunes account, it says "Try Another Apple ID. This Apple IS is already being used."

Of course it's already being used .. it's mine!

What's going on here?

I've got exactly the same problem. It has the log in screen where I put my apple id and password, then it tells me I need to enter my e-mail address, which I do and it then informs me that it is already in use!

So I can't even get into my own phone after this update. Let alone the fact that every time I connect it to itunes it immediately says "restoring iphone apps" and won't let me access anything.

Nice one Apple!!!

OK, here's what I've figured out.

Apple has, apparently, changed the rules for iTunes and Apple IDs. Now your Apple ID must be an e-mail address, it can't just be your name or an account identifier (like JBucanek).

So when you get to the Update Apple ID page, you are being asked to enter a new Apple ID which must be a valid e-mail address. The part that *****, however, is that the e-mail address you enter cannot be the e-mail address already associated with your iTunes / Apple ID account! You'll get the stupid "This address is already in use" message.

I got past this point by entering the e-mail account I set up just for my iPhone. Now, of course, my new Apple ID is the e-mail account for my iPhone and I can't change it to my regular one in iTunes because that address is already associated with my Apple ID. 😢

I've opened a support ticket with iTunes to try and resolve this obvious oversight. But if you have a spare e-mail address, and you're willing to put up with having it your new Apple ID, you can at least get started with iOS 5.

Well, it is certainly a bit of a stupid thing that apple have done where you have to enter a completely different e-mail address to the one you registered with. But you can change it back after you've set everything up, so I guess it's not so bad in the end. Not sure what the point of using a different e-mail is. But hopefully everyone is getting round it like that now.

I am with everyone here that this is something that should have been caught in testing. I got through to support earlier today and they told me to go to appleid.apple.com to change my AppleID to my email address. Well first of all, like just about every other apple site today, it's hosed. Secondly, I actually tried a workaround and went into iTunes to the AppleStore and into my account. It lets you change your AppleID there, but I was getting the same error message of "that username is already in use". Well, umm, yeah - it's me!

I took the suggestion on this board and put in another email account (my work account - ugh!) just to get my phone back. I really hope I can set it back later,

Anyone know of any negative ramifications of this?
