SSH from Mac get Operation Timed Out

Never used SSH before. Do I have to have a certain Port open on my client MAC to connect to a remote server?

Seems to default to Port 22 since the message I get is "port 22: Operation timed out". HoweverlLooking at my local Mac port 22 is not open according to the Network Utility Port Scan.
