As I was attempting to download the new iOS 5 software I get an error message that says "There was a problem downloading the software for the iPhone. The network connection could not be established." What does this mean?
I'm having the same issue. Pretty sure it's just a case of a busy server. Try again later tonight, tomorrow...ect.
I've done everything the troubleshooting site tells me to do.. i.e: checking my security settings, updating to the latest version of itunes, restarting my computer, updating my macs software... and nothing works..

did you just keep trying? because i've attemted it about 15 times...?

Yup, busy server. I got something like the error message you got, and a few tries later it said it couldn't connect to Apple's servers to verify because they were busy or unavailable. It's finally worked now, on the 8th or 10th try (all within the last 30 minutes). Huge download though (.75GB!)...hopefully it doesn't chew up whatever space was left, and overwrites the old stuff instead.
Yeah, I saw the same thing. Got to a state where all I'm getting is 3004 error codes and now appear to have bricked my iPhone. All I get now is an iPhone is Rescue Mode and needing to Restore. Ugh. Oh well, hope the servers keep serving....as I'm dead in the water right now.
Well, that's reassuring - my phone Restored, and I'm up and running. It's nice when things work out right....
hey dude, same thing was happening to me, its just an issue with the servers being busy.
i kept re-trying and by the 6th time it finally went through and updated.
just keep at'er man it'll work eventually!
i'm getting an error -3497 i dont know what it is and i dont know what's wrong. been downloading for the 5th time. i thought my 5th download was going to be ok because it almost reached the finish line. Got very dissapointed when the error occured. now im starting all over again
Hi I had to try 15 times (all didnt work) but then i thought maybe my firewall was stopping it - so i removed my firewall/security on my computer clicked update/download and it worked 1st time! try this (id just make sure if you do close all internet tabs down)
I'm now on my fifth try... crossing my fingers. If it doesn't work, I'll see if removing firewall works.
I turned off the firewall and finally worked!
Interesting all the issues with upgrading to IOS 5 for the IPhone 4. When I upgraded mine several weeks ago it took 3 attempts then worked. My daughter has had no end of trouble with hers....15 20 times, keeps coming up with errors. Same issues as everyone else. Just tried one fix that was noted.......turn off firewall and bingo all worked. It is a pity issues like this aren't recognised by Apple and resolved.....Anyway one happy IPhone 4 user. Thanks guys
I am tired with mine trying to update it for uncountable times now days and nights!! Somebody help! I have turned off my windows firewalls and AVG too. Keeps coming: "There was a problem downloadin the software for my Iphone4 The Network connection timed out. Make sure your Network settings are correct and your network connection is active, or try again later. (Stopped (err= -3259))" Starts all over and over.
