iTunes 10.5 and Microsoft keyboard media keys with IntelliType Installed

Hi. I just updated to iTunes 10.5 and the media keys (play/pause, back, and forward buttons -- the latter two of which have been mapped to previous and next track respectively) on my Microsoft Ergonomic 4000 keyboard no longer work when iTunes in minimized. It works fine if iTunes is the active window. I tried installing the latest version of IntelliType (v8.2) and the installation notified me that I already have the latest version. I had no problems with the older version of iTunes (10.4).

Is anyone else having this problem? Any solutions? Thanks in advance!

I have a Sidewinder X4 and I have the same symptoms: works when iTunes has focus, doesn't when something else has focus. Kinda defeats the purpose of having the key at all since spacebar does the same thing now.

I had 10.4 until this evening and it worked no matter what had focus. As soon as I updated, it stopped.

I read here that uninstalling Intellitype fixes it. That would be fairly stupid if uninstalling added features, but I'm going to give it a try.

Well I can confirm that that works, but now I don't know if my macro keys (which are unassigned as of yet since I have had the keyboard for all of 13 hours) will be able to be used.

Just checked and no, they cannot. Likewise, the OSD for volume change has been removed and I can no longer switch between keyboard profiles.

I guess if you want the media keys to work, you have to weigh that against having the other special keys on your keyboard work (though the calculator-starter key works fine still).

Personally, I'm going to turn it back on and hope that Apple sends out an updated build with the media key functionality of 10.4.

Uninstalling IntelliType worked for me as well (Microsoft Media 1000 keyboard, Windows 7, iTunes 10.5) 🙂. The only letdown is I now I can't assign special tasks to the other buttons.

But the truth is, I don't really care so much as long as I can control my music... I'm also suspecting IntelliType to have been causing me tons of "Windows Explorer has stopped working" - crashes. I used to get that every 15 minutes or so, extremely annoying. It hasn't happened for over a day since I uninstalled.

Confirmed here as well with MS Wireless Keyboard 6000 v3 with the latest IntelliType 8.2 on Win7 x64. iTunes 10.5 doesn't capture the media control keys when it's not the active window, whereas other media players still do.

(In fact, if another media player is open in the background and iTunes is the active window, the other media player will still capture the media control keys first, so they'll only work in iTunes if it's the active window *and* there are no other players open!)

I found a workaround:

http://andy.hillhome.org/blog/code/ituneskeys/

I extracted the binaries to a folder in my documents, double-clicked ituneskeys.exe and they started working as expected again. This is on windows 7 x64 with intellitype 8.2 installed.

I have not tested it with other media players.

I haven't tested it with any full screen apps yet either.

I also added a shortcut to ituneskeys.exe to my startup folder so hopefully they will just automagically work from here on out.

I encountered the same issue, on both a Microsoft keyboard 2000 and a Logitech G500 mouse. Both have keys mapped to multimedia functions which used to work when previous iTunes versions were in the background, but no longer work since I've upgraded to 10.5. They do, btw, still work for Windows Media Player when it's open and in the background.

Installing a 3rd party software to fix something that worked flawlessly before upgrading to the latest version is not something I am happy to do.

I managed a different FIX. This is just for Microsoft Multimedia keyboard (I have Microsoft 8000)

I uninstalled Microsoft Intellitype 8.1 that I had and then installed the newer 8.2 Version.

Before I did that I Downgraded to Itunes 10.3 64x like someone else said, but it did not help.

If this fix don't work with Itunes 10.5 then Downgrade like I did, It easier..No copying of files needed.

After you uninstall Itunes 10.5 and Install 10.3, it give you an error for your library.

So you press "SHIFT" and then open ITUNES.

then you go to "My Music\iTunes" folder inside your genereal music folder, it should be there. (WIN 7)

then to "Previous iTunes Libraries" folder and you should have a backup or and some kind of old "itunes Library folder" files...you choose one of them and Itunes opens fine with all playlist and everything.

Now everything workd find.

Good luck!

P.S

I after all this this does not work, might be because I installed Itune 10.3 before the new Intellitype 8.2.

So try Uninstalling Intellitype 8.2 again.

Then reinstall it...maybe it does things when Installing...I don't know.
