iOS 5 - iPad could not be restored

I've tried several times to update my iPad 2 to iOS 5.

It took forever to download the software. I updated iTunes to the latest version, rebooted the computer and went about updating my iPad.

After iTunes reported it was backing up my iPad, it attempted to restore the software but failed with the message "The iPad "Ezlivin's iPad" could not be restored. An internal error occurred."

***? What "internal error"?

I've tried this several times with the same failure message.

Next time why not give me a Blue Screen of Death with incomprehensible textual gibberish? It'll make as much sense....

These are the definition of the error:

Errors 3000-3999 (3002, 3004, 3013, 3014, 3018, 3164, 3194, and so on): Error codes in the 3000 range generally mean that iTunes cannot contact the gs.apple.com server on ports 80 or 443. This may be because out-of-date or incorrectly configured security or firewall software is interfering, an old version of iTunes is installed, an entry in your hosts file redirecting requests to gs.apple.com (see error 1004 above), or because of your Internet proxy settings. If you are using a proxy, try without using one or with a known-good network. If that does not resolve the issue, follow iTunes for Windows: Troubleshooting security software issues. Error 3014 may indicate that you need to free up more disk space on the computer before trying to restore again. Error 3194 most likely indicates you do not have the latest version of iTunes installed Update to the latest version of iTunes.

Yeah, I got a similar error:

The iPad "(name of my iPad)" could not be restored. An unknown error occurred (3200).

When I click the "More information" button, this page opens:

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1275

Unfortunately there is no mention of this error 3200 on that page!

Restarting a second time yielded the same error.

I am now trying a third time right now...

I've got the original iPad and have been getting the same error message. I updated to 10.7.2 first, I've tried downloading a fresh copy of iTunes and re-installing that, have restarted my Mac, have restarted my iPad both ways (power AND power-and-home), yet continue to get this error message.

I've paid for the two years of AppleCare (original iPad) and am disappointed that I'm having this much trouble. I considered the Express Support, but the earliest they'll call is tomorrow... hope someone finds an answer soon.
