Q: iTunes asking for backup password???

I am upgrading my iphone 4 to iOS 5. I backed up my phone (via iTunes 10.5) and downloaded and installed iOS 5. I am now going through the setup process and it is at the "Restore from iTunes Backup" step. I connect to iTunes and iTunes is prompting me for a password to "unlock your iPhone backup file." No I did not encrypt the iPhone backup, nor is it or was it checked in iTunes. I have tried my iTunes password, my 4 digit unlock code for the iPhone, and several other passwords. When I did the backup an hour ago I was not asked for a password. I am at a loss as to what it is.

At the end I have managed to make the iphone to update and continue working normally.

The solution has been to upgrade itunes, after that I entered the password of the computer where the backup was done and it passed successfully. I tried with that password lots of times before without success.

But there has been more than a month of trying to find the password, and even the password crackers told me that the backups haven´t a password...

So there is a problem with the iphones backups, not with the users...

    Good luck,

    Rafael

I had the EXACT SAME PROBLEM!!!! I wasn't sure if it was my apple ID or my passcode, but when I tried both, they didn't work. I realised that it was the very first passcode i had ever used for my IPod. Thank God I had my birthyear for it!

There seems a lot of confusion with this Issue but figured I would add my own experience.

I was updating my phone OS due to corruption issues.

I Installed  ITunes for first time on this laptop.

backed up phone and ran OS update.

OS updated but then would not let me restore backup data despite not setting any passwords.

Finally resolved it thanks to this thread by.

    1) making a new backup and setting a password

    2) restoring that new backup and then changing password.

    3) Then restored original backup and used the new password I had created and it worked.

I also ensured the password I had set was not something I had ever used anywhere before ever as a lot of folks have had success with old passwords and i wanted to see if I could exclude that possibility.

    Hope that helps

but looking at the vastly contradicting solutions here i am thinking it could be something else going on entirely.

Now see if I can catch up on those 4 hours of my life i have lost

gl and keep trying you'll get there in the end

Just to add my 2 cents:

I was prompted to do a routine update, after which point my iphone wiped all of my data.  I attempted to restore it, and I was asked for a password.  Just to be clear, I deliberately left my iphone backup unencrypted.  I have been searching everywhere for the answer.  It was not 1234, my itunes password, my computer password, an old password, stored in my keychain access, or anything else that made logical sense.  It was a password that I have never used for anything but is a variation of several of my passwords, including my itunes password.  I literally sat and typed every variation I could think of that could have been generated until one randomly started to work.

Good luck to all who try to do this, and I hope you work out how to do this, because it seems different for every single person.  Hopefully one of these bright suggestions will help.  I know I'm definitely encrypting my backup from now on, so I'll get to CHOOSE my password.

By the way, it is extremely unfair of apple to charge us for dealing with their screw-ups.

    This bug is very random.

Eldest daughter and Middle daughter used to share a PC. Eldest daughter got a PC laptop for xmas. She is the ONLY one who uses her laptop. She has been syncing her iphone to her laptop for the last 3 months. She upgraded to IO5 and got the same issue that everyone has discussed here. I tried every single suggestion. I downloded elcomsoft - it returned a "no password found" dialog box. Out of desperation we tried facebook, email, game passwords. Nothing. The very last thing we tried was her sisters facebook password. That worked.

That is just so unbelievably random. So to recap. Itunes on a new and completely different computer somehow managed to store a password from a  previous computer and from an account that didn't even belong to my eldest daughter.

Let's think about that for a second. What if we had an out of town who used my computer to check their facebook or email. It could hae decided to grab that one and we would really be in trouble.

I've also noticed that this has been going on for about 5 months and there still isn't a solution or a bug fix.

    Bravo Apple.

Yes, I agree with your observation that the solution is to keep trying the same password  that you know is correct.  For me, the fourth try of typing in the exact same password works in iTunes on my iMac.  I have repeated this several times, and each time it works.

I also reset my password, but the same problem occurs in iTunes.  I have to type in my password four times in iTunes to get it to work.

iTunes is having issues.  I can log in easily on the first attempt every time to post on this message board and on my iPad 2, but in iTunes on my iMac it takes four attempts and then it works.  Apple needs to release a statement to the public telling people abut this.  For Apple to know that this problem exists and that it is causing literally thousands of people to be stressed out is callous and uncaring.

I agree.  The solution (for me at least) is to keep trying the same password  that I know is correct.  For me, the fourth try of typing in the exact same password works in iTunes on my iMac.  I have repeated this several times, and each time it works.

What is messing people up is that when iTunes does not recognize the correct password, people are attempting other passwords.  Those other passwords are all incorrect.  The problem, as you stated, is that the password was entered correctly the first time but because of iTunes having issues it does not recognize it.

People, just keep entering the password you know is correct.  It will eventuall recognize it, or at least this works for me.  If this still does not work, reset your password (but then you may still have to enter it repeatedly in iTunes).

    Apple needs to fix this.

Well. I tried EVERY password I could remember and then out of frustration and boredom I tried "password".

    Guess what. Yep, it worked

I have NEVER used "password" for any device, account, app, email or anything EVER.

    It's clearly a bug.

The below steps worked for me, feel free to give it ago.

    1. When promted for a password enter any random one.
    2. Once you receive the incorrect password notification, click ok.

    3. Disconnect your iphone from the USB while I tunes is open and re-connect after 5 seconds.

    4. Your backup should start automatically.

    Good Luck Guys

Rite lads an lasses, first post on this MENTAL issue, i tried every password i could think of all the zeros the 1234, 12345, nothing worked, however the password you use when you first connect the phone to a pc/mac to enable it for use, thats the password thats worked for me, a most ridiculous decision by apple to allow this and i got it fluke!

Utterly crazy but its worked for me, for anybody else rying to get aound it its normally the first password you associate with the phone, hope this helps!

I also did not set up or create a back up password, what apple were thinking for this to happen is beyond me.
