Upgrading to iOS 5, internal error occurs

I have an iPhone 4 (Verizon) with the latest release of iTunes (10.5) on my laptop (13" MacBook Pro with 10.6.8).

Launch iTunes

Click on Update to update my iPhone to iOS 5

Backup runs

Extracting software runs in iTunes

I get "The iPhone" "iPhone" could not be restored. An internal error occurred".

Clicking on More Information isn't helpful.

Anyone have fixes for this?

I hestitate doing a factory restore, upgrade to iOS 5 then restore my my stuff from back up. I will my text message history return? Games in progress still be there. Pictures, I have taken?

HELP! 🙂

It doesn't show an error code until I click on More Information: brings me to the page marked with 3200 error code.

I read through the page and it mentions security being out of date. Even though I updated iTunes to 10.5 and checked again for more OS updates for my computer and none were listed, so I moved forward with the iOS 5 update. I just now went back to check for more OS updates and one was listed - a security update. So, I'm running the update and will give it another shot. I will reply here again if I was successful or not in upgrading my iPhone. Wish me luck!

I got further after during a security update then received a 3004 error in the middle of my iPhone being wiped. the error has something to do with not being able to contact the gs.apple.com server - I'm guessing because it is being slammed.

For about 15 minutes, I didn't have a phone - more of a shell of its former self. I had to restore to factory then restore from back up to get it back. I'm waiting until later tonight or tomorrow to try again.
