Hey Caren don't dispair, I also thought all was lost until until deepak posted a link to the solution.

Watch this vid on youtube and follow the steps to the letter. If the download from the vid wants to save as a zip file see my previous post for solution:

You will not be able to reset or activate your phone until you jailbreak and unlock the phone. This is all explained on the vid. The guy who made it is a genius! Goodluck!

The youtube vid I recommended caused safari, cydia and mail to crash. I managed to find a solution and now my 3Gs iphone works like new and with the most up to date version installed 5.0.1

See for ian559fresno's solution: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aNK_ZXqF6r0&feature=g-like&context=G204ae57ALTv2x BQAAAA

Anyway you need to follow ian559fresno to the letter but download different files to the ones he suggests into a new folder on your desktop.

I used: 5.0.1 (3GS): iPhone2,1_5.0.1_9A405_Restore.ipsw firmware from the following website: http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=750 Please note that this file may try to download as a zipped file - you don't want this to happen so change the file extension to .ipsw when you go to save it. Save as type: "All files"

I downloaded the latest redsn0w - RedSn0w 0.9.10b3 (Windows): redsn0w_win_0.9.10b3.zip from http://www.iclarified.com/entry/index.php?enid=16424 . Extract redsnow into your new folder.

Now do exactly what ian559fresno says.

I made sure that I did a full restore in itunes before starting. This re-locked the phone and sent it back to the searching - no sim installed stage. If yours is already doing this then obviously you wont be able to restore in iTunes and you just need to proceed with the above instructions.

This worked brilliantly for me. 3 weeks ago I didn't even know what jail breaking was but after about 20 hours of research and help from some very smart people I finally have a phone that works.

Cheers

What is the Call Back and Home Button, activation? I have an iphone 4S which was a replacement from Apple, and I can't get past the activation screen. Also, iTunes reads: SIM not supported, and will not start. I''ve contacted AT&T and Apple; they said I should receive a phone call within 24 hours, and my phone should be unlocked. Thanks for any advice, it will be greatly appreciated. 😉
