Im just off the phone to apple, i explained about the problems we were having, the guy on the phone said hes had a few calls about this but he hadnt a clue how or when it will be fixed. i was put through to his supervisior and she said she hasnt heard about this??? anyway, was on phone to her about 30 mins telling her every detail of whats happened and whats on the screens of my iphone/itunes.... She is sending my case as high priority to the engineers, she has took my home telephone number and email address, shes also emailed me contact details to get in touch with her directly. I will update again whats happens from here.

I would recomend everyone phoning and telling them your problems, the more calls and more info they get on this the better it should be for trying to fix the problem.

i live in the uk and used this number

    0800 048 0408

Hope this helps a couple people.

well i guess i'm not alone in this case, it worsen when i now know no one had any definitive answer for this issue.

so technically this ios5 has costed me some bucks (for buying another cheap phone as the 'temporary' solution; as suggested by my carrier provider) and substantially elevates my stress level up to the point, as a fanboy, where i think i had to throw this 3gs outside my apartment windows now.

but, my finger always tapping on 'try again' for 5 hours now. it's THE only way, right?

I am just off the phone to a less than helpful Apple tech support person that insists that retrying endlessly is the only option! He did not offer any other solution or assistance as to why this problem is happening!

And the fact that iTunes is saying that I have no sim 'must be some other issue I can sort when my phone has activated!!'

Next resort is to hassle someone in the store face to face and demand that Apple resolve this, otherwise I have one expensive paperweight!

If anyone else has had a better experience let me know as Apple are denying responsibility here...

Last time I'll be updating this thing, it'll be on eBay soon and I'll be getting myself a Galaxy SII.....

Just to update... Perseverance has paid off...!

Following some other advice, the sensible thing was to run the entire process with the Sim Tray removed.

Using RS 0.9.9b4, and Apple's standard IP SW I chose only to install BB and De-Activate (Allowing you to re-activate properly when the Sim is re-inserted) When complete and running through the initial setup, it will warn you about No Sim, just continue, chose NOT to enable location services and when the Activation time comes, insert sim and try again... and presto! (Re-enable location services anytime afterwards)

So currently I have a previously J_B 3GS, BB- 6.15.00 fully working now and not J_B (Tested by restarting un-tethered!)

Got unlocked officially by Vodafone the other day, so J_B not required. They unlock any PAYG phone over 1 yr old for free! (Took 36hrs)

Let me know if this helps any of you!

Good Luck, I know the pain!!

i called up this morning, they hadnt heard of the problem until i told them. they booked me an appointment on monday to go in store and see them. so im gonna go there, i hope they give me a replacement phone.

but im not on contract or anything and i bought the phone in a random shop.

ill let you all know how it goes.

i think everyone should called them up and tell them so that they find a solution faster

I finally got my iPhone back to life. I jb the iPhone using redsn0w, and choose both the "install ipad baseband" and 'deactivate'. I also use the custom firmware as the process has jb the iPhone, and now it is fully functional. I don't care about the ipad baseband since my iPhone 3GS is out of warranty anyway. If you're doesn't care about it either, you should have just do the same thing. The past couple of days has been so difficult for me without my iPhone.

I live in the US and this problem is happening becuase more then a couple thousands (probly more ) are trying to update today so this is causing apple servers to crash or become unavilable to some users becuase other users are blocking them ( if you know what i mean) if u keep trying to activative it and keep pressing try again you should be able to get your spot and activate your phone...this can take you from your 3rd try to your 100th try but keep trying...hope this helps

Same thing here. It probably took 4 to 5 hours to activate.  PITA that it makes you shut down between attempts.  I tried it both ways (hooked to iTunes and wirelessly).  When I did connect, it was wirelessly.
