iCloud Contacts Sync Trashes My Outlook Contacts

My master Contacts list is maintained in Outlook 2010 running on Windows 7.

I have been using MobileMe to sync my contacts to MobileMe and then from MobileMe to my Mac running Lion (and Snow Leopard prior to Lion) with no issues.

I downloaded the PC iCloud Control Panel and installed it including signing off of my MobileMe account via the MobileMe Control Panel.

I converted my MobileMe account to iCloud.

I signed on to the PC iCloud Control Panel and selected just Contacts and hit Apply.

Result:

- Two Outlook Folder Groups: My Contacts and iCloud - OK

- Contacts in my My Contacts->Contacts folder deleted - I would have liked a warning about this.

- Outlooks folder in my iCloud Folder Group trashed: many contacts duplicated with the exact same info; some duplicated with different info; in general a mess which is unusable!

How in world could this have been tested?

After the MobileMe fiasco a few years ago, you would have thought that this could not be possible. iCloud is an embarassment! For God's sake hire testers who know what they are doing before you release your software.

I want my MobileMe back!

I performed similar steps that WildClyde did, converting from MM to iCloud, using a PC running Outlook 2010, an iPad and an iPhone 4. My contacts survived the experience but I lost a decade's worth of appointments and calendar entries in my .pst file. Now, when I go to my calendar on iCloud, my appointments are indeed there. Back in the old days, with MM, you could re-sync, and instruct MM which data base to use and either to replace or merge. Has anyone seen how to do this in iCloud? It would be a disaster if all of a sudden my appointtments disappeared from the iCloud calendar.

Having a separate iClod folder for Contacts isn't a big deal; however, when I add new contacts from within Outlook, they are added to My Contacts, not iClod, hence they don't sync.

Doe anyone know how to get Outlook to default to the iClod contacts folder when adding new contacts?

For example, when you right click on an addressee in an email message and select "Add to Outlook Contacts".

I'm going back to iTunes...

I found the same issue - installed iCloud seamlessly. It then sent contacts to the Iphone and duplicated everything. It took over Outlook contacts and any new contacts I added were in a different file and therefore different address book section. When I decided to uninstall iCloud, it deleted the whole address book even though I tapped the button that asks whether you want to revert to the original Outlook address book setup.

Thank God for backups, but really this is TOO MUCH of Apple and, no doubt, they will accept no liability for this damage. Anyone with a long standing address book and no good backup will be stuffed!!!

For goodness sake, Apple, test your software properly. I'm really disappointedin you. Yoiu have no right to cause this sort of problem to my computer.

I am using Outllok in Windows 7 and had the same issue. You just need to set your "default" contact list to always be icloud contacts.

Try this link: http://msmvps.com/blogs/jeffloucks/archive/2009/12/21/outlook-2010-how-to-change -your-default-contacts-address-book.aspx

It is for a windows based PC but I am thinking / hoping it will also work for you?

You can restore your contacts into the outlook "catagory" view that we all loved. Just found it, and still needs some tweaking to get back to normal, but at least its off the cloud....

Open Outlook

Contacts Tab

Right click "Contacts in iCloud"

Copy Contacts

Scroll up, personal folders, contacts

Then view by catagory, sort assending, etc...

This was driving me nuts....

Hope this helps!!
