MacBook Pro mid 2010, Lion 10.7.2, still getting kernel panics

Hi there,

Just updated my MBP to Lion 10.7.2, with the big hope that this bug (the kernel panic - black screen that happens sometimes when switching from the Intel to the NVidia graphics card) was finally put to rest. It took me a little bit more time to get one, but I can still get one. And actually, very easy.

I have checked all the info I can find on the internet, deleted the windowserver.plist file (from my user and the system folders), and nothing seems to solve it. I don't know if it could be something hardware related: I did not have a single problem before upgrading to Lion, so I think it is not something hw related.

The test case I have is quite simple:

- Make sure you have the setting in the energy prefpanel to allow the machine to switch between the graphic cards.

- Restart the machine so there is nothing opened when it starts.

- Make sure the Intel graphic card is running (I check this with iStat Menus 3 - and yes, I have everything up-to-date)

- Open Photo Booth.

- Starting PB, without no filter applied, you should still be using the Intel card.

- Go into the filters section. The first page shouldn't make it load the NVidia card.

- Move to the second panel. When doing this I always get the kernel panic.

Here is a crash report. As far as I can see, the com.apple.NVDAResman is always the last item in the backtrace

So, any ideas, recomendations? I'm thinking seriously in taking the MBP to the Apple Store and see what they say, but unless it's a known HW problem, I'm almost sure it's going to take days for they to say something. I have never taken any of my macs to the Apple Store, so it might not be like that, but I don't know.

Thanks for your help.

That's the right move.

I started having this problem after I upgraded from SL and I was hoping that 10.7.2 would solve my kernel panics too. I have a 2010 15" MBP as well but with mine, I can't even get past the login without it panicking. I have to resort to using gfxcardstatus to keep it on integrated and then I can log in. I made an appointment at the Genius Bar as well. Pretty disappointed with this....I love my MBP but wondering if I should go back to SL. I'll wait to see what the Genius has to say first.

Well, the trip to the Genius Bar didn't solve anything or told me anything I didn't know. I can either try going back to SL, or try doing a fresh install of Lion, or wait until Apple solves this, the TS4086 kb article. The first two cases are a moot point, I want Lion and doing a fresh install I'm 99% sure won't solve anything, and waiting for Apple to solve this is what I've been doing since Lion came out.

Not exactly what I was expecting, but maybe there is not much they can do (about replacing hardware) once Apple recoginzes the issue and "promises" a software update.

Oct 15, 2011 7:42 AM in response to eric160

Well, it looks like that solves the issues for the people who have had it's logic board replaced. Here they didn't even suggested that as an option, and when I mentioned that I had read in this forums that, they just said that they had their hands strapped, as Apple already knows about the issue and is asking us to expect a software update.

So yes, I guess you're lucky, let's hope that solves the issue for you.

It's not that I would like to have my logic board replaced just for the fun of it, but I fear the problem is indeed something HW related and the software/firmware fix will just try to workaround the real problem.

Let's just hope Apple doesn't take another 30 or 40 days to get some kind of solution for this. I can't really use the laptop for what I bought it for (PS, Lightroom, taking notes at classes, and so on), and it's been months like that.

Oct 15, 2011 10:00 AM in response to rgomez

Perhaps you can go to another Genius Bar. It probably depends on the "Genius" that's serving you too. Maybe the next one will give you the logic board if you rant and rave long enough....I'll let you know when I get mine installed but it's going to take 1 week to order it and then another 5 days to install it...😟

If the problem is occuring when the graphics card switches, maybe unchecking the option "Automatic Graphics Switching" in the Energy Saver Preferences and only using the higher perfomance card may help. This might decrease battery life but I've been using this for a few hours and so far so good.
