Wow! iCloud is a mess. Had to go through so many hoops because I had an old Apple ID (one that wasn't an email address). But was finally able to sort it out and convert my old ID to a new one ( added).

I was able to sign into no problem. But, now I can't sign into iCloud on my device - I get the following error message. "Unsupported Apple ID: This Apple ID cannot be used to sign in to iCloud. Create a new Apple ID or sign in with a different one."

How does that make any sense, if I'm able to sign in with that account on no problem?

iPhone 3GS, Other OS, iOS 5

I'm having the same issue and receiving the sane error message -- I cannot log in to iCloud on my Mac, iPad or PC but navigating to the website allows me to sign in.

My current Apple ID was converted to an e-mail based ID years ago and is a account.  I really do not want to create a new Apple ID just for iCloud with no way to merge the accounts.

Same exact issue here. AppleCare had no information on the issue.

I'm having the same issue.  Any luck since your initial post?

I am having the same issues.  I cannot get iCloud to verify under my email address.  For some bizarre reason it went to my secondary address which is a Yahoo account.  iClouds is become iBad.  I cannot change my user which is my Yahoo email to my regular email.  When I try I get this message:  The requested application was not found on this server.  Hopefully this is a temporary issue and Apple can either fix it or uncrash their server (which might be the issue).  Luckily I have a SafeSync account with unlimited data space.  I have to wonder if there is also a conflict with any other cloud programs?

I'm piling on this one, too. iCloud's launch is a mess. Can't get it to recongize my account name or password. How can Apple be screwing this up so badly after waiting months to get it right? Horrible execution, One Infinite Loop.

Thanks for adding to the thread everyone. Seems this is a very common thing. I still haven't found solution.

But, I did try to change my ID to be an email address. That didn't help. Now I'm just stuck with an extra large id...

Same here joey pepperoni. Have the same exact issue

As I've polled around to others, it seems that those with an old Apple ID are all effected by this.

I cab't believe Apple wouldn't have tested Apple IDs of their oldest users? Seems like those are the people you want using the system.

Does everyone else have an old Apple ID as well?

Same issue here - Original Apple ID was not an email address, so after upgrading to Lion 10.7.2 and attempting to sign into iCloud it advises I have to change it to an email address id.

Not a problem - I go to the ID site where there's a "Change your ID to the full email address" option, but clicking submit does nothing.  Attempting to manually change it to the email address advises that the email address is already associated to an ID.

So I added an additional email address and was then able to change the ID to be this email address.  But I can't now change it back to the original one, so I'm stuck with the alternate email address as the ID.

This at least lets me log onto iTunes, the App Store and the iCloud website - but when I try to access iCloud via System Prefs I get told that "This Apple ID cannot be used to sign in to iCloud.  Create a new Apple ID or sign in with a different one" even though the Ts&Cs come up in the background - clicking OK gives me "Unrecognized Apple ID or password." on the sign-in screen.

    Woe is me..

As of 10:15 AM CDT it is still FUBAR.  Chat is impossible and the phone contact is just as bad.  iCloud is still not verified though it has been "Verifying" for at least 20 minutes or more.  I am still getting a loop regarding photo stream where I can either ignore or setup which is what it is attempting to do right now.  In addition my email on my primary account works but I have been receiving duplicates of some email.   Apple had plenty of time to get their act together but once again they f**ked up.

What a mess life can be without the ability to check email, for those of you that went through all this crap already with mobile me at the start know that this is to be expected with any v1.0 product from apple. I moved over to the cloud last night and all was good, I wake up this morning and I am unable to get email due to my PW not being good... although that same passwod can get me into my account settings~!?

Support documentation = none (thanks apple)

and now I am left to feel like a blackberry owner wondering if my mail will ever come back.

Mobile me user since 2002 and you would think that apple would have sorted this out already, basic mail functionality is crutial to all users of a paid service.

Hello, same here. My Apple ID is an old one, but with email address format.

I can log to the website (, but cannot access it from the system prefs :  "This Apple ID cannot be used to sign in to iCloud.  Create a new Apple ID or sign in with a different one".

I also have a mobileMe account, that i DON'T WANT to merge with my AppleID.

    Please help.

Yeah, not an auspicious start for Mr. Cook as CEO. A series of disappointments these past few weeks.

I cloud will have to have an ID to work.  You can use your old Apple ID for I tunes.  I Cloud and I Tunes are completely different.
