Jan 26, 2012 7:03 AM in response to LeeinATLby Liverpool_Rich,I totally agree with most people on here. Apple need to fix this issue. I love all things Apple but not to be able to simply click and delete is crazy. I know you can get around by re-setting it, etc. At the end of the day it's a folder which as long as your the user you should be able to delete the picutres.
Can't belive a fix has not been done yet.
Come on Apple sort this out.

Jan 26, 2012 8:14 AM in response to Liverpool_Richby Wood Nut,I suspect it is an issue of going the next step and deciding on a design for continuously syncing between the cloud and devices. It is easier for them to simply upload a batch, and download the new as a batch to other devices.
They need a syncing strategy analgous to dropbox and Picasa. Dropbox sees to have it nailed. Picasa is inconsistent. I suspect they are having problems making something like Dropbox work, and maybe managing traffic and reliability for that work over cellular networks. Easier when connected and when bandwidth isn't a major issue.

Why do you say that when Apple have a similar facility to Dropbox, i.e. iDisk, working perfectly well for a number of years now.

Jan 26, 2012 8:32 AM in response to igmackenzieby JJR-1964,Haven't they discontinued MobileMe accounts? Main difference is that Dropbox starts out with 2 GB for free which users can increase by having other people install Dropbox through their invitation. Wasn't MobileMe $99 a year? I always wanted it but wasn't willing to pay that.

Jan 26, 2012 8:38 AM in response to JJR-1964by igmackenzie,MobileMe is still valid till June 2012.
My point was relating to the poster's point about Apple's inability to make such a service work when it has already proved it can!

Jan 26, 2012 8:47 AM in response to JJR-1964by igmackenzie,Sure, some people have had issues, but not much with iDisk.
I (and several other people I know) have used MM for years with no problems at all.

Jan 26, 2012 9:02 AM in response to igmackenzieby JJR-1964,That's good. Doesn't much matter now, though -- it's an unavailable service. New users are no longer being accepted. The only comparison that matters is Dropbox vs. iCloud.

There is no comparison to be made, as there is no Dropbox-type facilty in iCloud. Apple have not announced any replacement for iDisk yet.

Jan 26, 2012 9:13 AM in response to igmackenzieby JJR-1964,I really don't care about "design" or "concept." What I care about is syncing files across multiple devices. Dropbox is one way of doing that. iCloud is another. They both work very differently. Dropbox is preferable because I have more control over my files. If I worked primarily in Pages I might prefer iCloud, but since Word is a more powerful word processing program and Dropbox actually allows me to organize my files and easily choose which one to share (unlike iCloud), then I prefer Dropbox.
I'm working on a book project with a coeditor and have a shared Dropbox folder for the book project. Can't do something that simple and practical using iCloud.
Sugarsync sounds interesting. I may check it out.

Jan 26, 2012 9:15 AM in response to lucasc5by Violet Sun Electric,I personally think pogoplug pro and tonidoplug2 beat any cloud service that you pay for. I have over 8TB of data on my pogoplug cloud.

Jan 26, 2012 11:06 AM in response to JJR-1964by igmackenzie,As I said, you cannot make any comparison between iCloud and Dropbox as they are not comparable! There is no file sharing facility within iCloud. Apple have not made any announcement on a replacement for iDisk which was/is a file sharing utility much like Dropbox.

Jan 26, 2012 11:52 AM in response to igmackenzieby JJR-1964,They are comparable on the -user end-... if anyone cares about users...in terms of reasons for use and expected functions. The fact is I'm seriously annoyed at having to use both Dropbox and iCloud to serve different functions when iCloud could serve them all.
I really like that I can install an app in iTunes on my computer and it automatically appears on my iPhone and my iPad. I like the idea of Photostream if it allowed direct control of individual files. I like that my Pages files update across my devices. These are all file management functions, though, which is what Dropbox is for too.
I bet that Apple isn't considering a replacement for iDisk because they consider iCloud to be the replacement.

Jan 26, 2012 11:57 AM in response to JJR-1964by igmackenzie,Sorry, but this conversation is going nowhere.
iCloud is not a replacement for iDisk. I've said that several times now. THERE IS NO FILE SHARING FACILITY IN iCLOUD. Simple as that.
Dropbox is an excellent service, and if any user is expecting a similar functionality from iCloud (as you suggest) they will be disappointed, and no such service has ever been advertised or suggested by Apple as being part of iCloud.
