Q: Delete single photos in photostream

No, there's no confusion. It works as a storage device by keeping photos in it for 30 days -- so it's a temporary storage device that users cannot control except to turn off or on.   

Dropbox is actually a useable tool. I'm doing real work with it.

If I delete Photo Stream by turning it off and then back on, will it delete the photos in my Camera Roll, since they are the same photos?!

Also my Photo Stream has photos in it that are much more that 30 days old?!

Your camera roll is safe.  Photostream only contains copies of the latest addition of new photos. 

Turning it off is like emptying out a shoe box of printed photos when you still have all the original color slides.

I just turned photo stream off, deleting the library and then back on again. I hoped it would be empty but within a few seconds everything 'iclouded' back again!

Icloud may be getting further behind the curve pretty fast.

Dropbox beta out:

My bet is on Dropbox, especially for those already using it.  And they don't seem inclined to pull out the rug from under previously existing features.

If they can do seamless transfers and full control of the cloud space as they do now, I would totally agree with you. I did just drop $15 for iPhoto so hopefully the new update will make it a little more usable.

The mechanism seems to work pretty well, just the file management is confusing. Heres hoping iOS5.1 will solve some of the issues

Yes if they could do that it would be great but wouldn't that make photo stream well erh "the same as drop box"  we have had several fan boys on here writing essays trying to convince us that PS is not meant to be drop box and Apple had no intention of replicating BB so please don't o holding your breath :-)

Chap, why do you feel the need to continuously weigh in with your "expert" advice, when you are clearly not qualified to offer any advice?  What are you doing here?  Why are you causing problems?  What is your end goal?  To get back at the "apple fanboys" who beat you up in high school?  Dropbox is not the same as photo stream.  That is a documented fact.  Not to mention that these so called "fanboys" are in actuality engineers who are offering real explanations on the use and purpose of apple functions.  All you are doing is proliferating the confusion and misinformation.  It's people like you who force technology companies to slowly and methodically roll out basic upgrades instead of simply putting out the most advanced product.  An easy excercise for you would be to save all of your comments from this string and then go read them in two years.  You will be embarrassed at how naive you are now.

One things for sure PS is certainly not Drop box we agree on that, it's just another feature that been poorly though through from the marketing and programming gods at Apple ..... Thank god I don't use it !!!!!

Actually, the point is that Dropbox is becoming more and more like PS and works better than it.  Engineers have to methodically roll out upgrades because their initial products often reveal a blinding stupidity about what is and is not useful -- when they do produce the most advanced product possible, people spend their time exploring all of its functions rather than asking for upgrades allowing them to perform simple and obvious functions.  Apple's done that too, but just not this time with PS.

Other engineers here are critical of PS in ways that indicate specific technical knowledge of the reasons for these design limitations. I don't see that in any of your posts.

There is nothing wrong with innovation but leaving out  basic functions is just plain stupid,  it's like building the worlds most advanced car engine but not putting a gearbox or a steering wheel on the car ....  I can live with the fact that OS is not meant as a storage device (although it will end up being one I feel)  but again the inability to delete something as a simple as a single image from multiple devices is just POOR .... It's the same with the inability of mail on IOS to handle nested folders just something else that's poor.... Apple in my opinion need to stop pushing out poorly implemented features and get some of the basics sorted .... It will be interesting to see now Jobbys passed on if he was the cause of these issues or if he took his eye of the ball in his final months we will see......

Chap, you can criticize apple features all the time.  i have plenty of my own criticism of apple.  however, your comments are nothing but annoying and argumentative.  you have yet to make any point other than to agree or disagree with people and make fun of people.  i'm just not really sure what your purpose is other than to cause more confusion.  keep up the good work. 

JJR, the problem i guess is that through anonymous posting, you don't know my qualifications.  that's fine.  i don't need to explain myself because i have access to information that you do not.  I am not guessing or assuming like many people here.  I am certainly not simply speaking to be heard like Chap.  I am an authority and whether you choose to take my word as gospel is up to you.  However, time will prove me right.  I also do agree that dropbox has PS like functionality.  However PS does not have dropbox functionality because it wasn't meant to.  I actually think dropbox is a far superior product to icloud in its current form but as i pointed out previously, the point of icloud and ps is not to store data but to enable a platform for others to store data and integrate across multiple devices.
