ICloud calendar/contacts sync with non iOS5 devices

I am a current MobileMe user. I would like to migrate the service to iCloud however I have a bit of a dilemma. I currently sync an older iPhone 2g along with my 4g, iPad and multiple Mac devices primarily for calendar and contact information. Is there a way I can still sync my 2g iPhone using caldav or a similar technology?

iPhone 4, iOS 4.3.3

I was able to configure a caldav on the 2g. It did go and verify (and passed) however it did not move any data to the phone.

I used my iCloud user ID (with the @me.com) and password. The server was at:

p01-caldav.icloud.com

Port is 443 (SSL)

Advaned server string is:

p01-caldav.icloud.com:443/[unique ID}/principal

Cant even get 2 way via the cable working either. I can push down to the phone, but when an event is created on the phone it does not go into the right calendar (local only).

Any help appreciated.

I decided that with all the headaches of the 2G that I would just use Google calendar and contacts as there seems to be no resolution to this issue other than a manual sync. Once they have a solution that works with my 2G I will make the move back. Apple, I am sure that others are making this switch. As a long time user of MobileMe I am sure I will not be the only customer that you loose!

This worked to get calendar and contacts to sync perfectly on my iphone 3g,

mac13k wrote this on onother post:

For calendar sync.

1. Go to Settings/Mail, Contacts, Calendars/Add Account.../other/CalDav

2. Type the following settings:

Server: caldav.icloud.com

User Name: your @me.com address

Password: your MM password

Description: Contacts iCloud

3. press Done and wait. The verification can take some time. After that you will have a new CalDav account. If you are lucky it will sync and you are home. If you are like me it will not sync. We need to make one adjustment.

4. Go to your new CaldDav account settings. You may notice that the server name has been changed to p02-caldav.icloud.com or something like that (p01, p03 etc.). That's good. We want that.

5. Now tap on "Advanced Settings" and copy the Account URL (all of it: fromhttps:// ... to principal).

6. go back to your CalDav account click on Server. Delete the current address ("p0x-caldav.icloud.com") and paste the address you copied from advanced settings. Hit Done and wait for verification. Now it should sync.

Fllow the same procedure for contacts with one difference - in step 2 you type contacts.icloud.com as server address.

This is not working for me 😟 Using iPhone 2G, and just trying to sync contacts (I don't care too much about calendars) I followed the steps as written twice- once choosing contacts under other (as would seem to make sense), and once choosing calDav (as indicated in the steps). Both times I got a message sayign "Cannot connect using SSL", and as far as I can tell the account was not functional. Am I missing something/doing something wrong?

First, thanks to everyone's advice for getting the iphone 3g working with icloud. I am running iOS 4.2.1, and I now have icloud mail, calendars, and contacts all working perfectly. I just followed the previously menioned steps to get the calanders working using the servername: caldav.icloud.com. BUT I had problems getting the contacts to work at first, like many other people. After trying several different recommended things, only one solution worked for me... and that was to go into my mac's Library folder - Application Support - Addressbook - Configuration.plist. Open the Configuration.plist file in text edit, and look for a string of text that looks like this (I put xxx on this post just to hide my personal info):

<string>https://xxxxxx%40xxxxxxx@p05-contacts.icloud.com:443/1182875297/carddavhome/card /DB3A5BCB-5F43-4BB3-A52F-7AF436C94D0C.vcf//xxxxxx%40xxxxxxx@p05-contacts.icloud.com:443/1182875297/carddavhome/card/DB3A5BCB-5F43-4BB3-A52F-7AF436C94D0C.vcf</strin g>

Once you have YOUR file open (won't work with the above code example), just copy the section starting from "https" ending at "icloud.com". Then type this exactly as you see it into the server box when you set up your contacts settings. Then proceed to simple enter the rest of the info... your icloud username and passsword. Bingo. It should then verify... then go to your address book, let it refresh, and all your contacts should appear! They did for me!
