This problem is solvable, Apple is just being lazy.
They won't even give you the option to delete an account. In my case all they have to do is to delete one of my ID's, I don't even want to merge the accounts, they can delete it and any content it was associated to. I just want to make that ID available again for my use. If they can't be bothered with that, merging accounts will likely never happen.
I just wish Apple would officially address the situation, show they understand that for some users this an issue that they feel needs to be fixed and work out a legitimate solution to the problem.
Apple's idea of a solution to deleting an account is just to log into your ID and clear out all the information and then log out and forget you ever had it. That ID and any of its content will be locked in their system forever!
just discovered my older apple ID.. and I do intend on finding out why my older purchases on itunes no longer work... I have a lot of years of life left and will be spending a lot of apple support hours asking the same question... and since I don't have a great memory.. it will be fun rediscovering these accounts over and over again. No doubt, several times over the next several decades. I just wonder what this will end up costing apple over the long term. I don't think it will dent their $140B cash horde in the bank.
With all that money, you'd think that solving this problem would just be a problem of.. hey it costs us pidly diddly to solve this problem that most human beings would have using our services... lets save everyone a ton of time and effort... heck it won't even cost $1B to solve this.. not even $100M .. not even $10M ... not even $1M ... maybe $100k to fix this.
Let's see now, how many apple users there are out there? 600M ? Let's say it costs $600M to solve this (which we know it doesnt).. that's like Apple investing $1 for every user. ok, lets say it costs $300M, then its like spending $.5 on every user to solve this problem... ok, ok, maybe it costs $150M to solve this.. so that's like apple spending a quarter for every user to solve this problem.... nah.. maybe it will cost apple $75M to solve this.. ok, so $.13 per user? hmmm... ok, 75 is too high you think? maybe it costs $30M to fix this.. ok, so that's like $.06 cents or less per user ? Does it actually work out to spending less than $.01 on your users to fix this? nope... too expensive, wont fix.. next!

Well that may be great for you, but for the myriad of other users out there, if Apple did this they'd be accused of stealing music that YOU OWNED, and then charging you to get it again. Apple conspiring to find just anouther way to suck every hard earned penny out of their users. So....not a viable option.
I just want to make that ID available again for my use. And you cant't use that account now, why? Why isn't is still "available" for your use?

And therein lies the rub. It would hardly be "legitimate" to trash some older ID that you set up at some point, and along with it, trash every purchase that had been done under that ID.

Unless you can articulate what the specific problem with the account you want to mothball is, you are not helping us to direct to you to a potential solution.
And oh, by the way, my "workaround" is a solution for me. I don't have anything to do with my old ID except to log onto it occasionally to change the password. Beyond that, it's like it doens't exist. Not understanding what the problem is with something that might take, say 1 minute per year of your time?
Please, if I have misunderstood what you are indicating your issue is, the please clarify exactly what your particular situation is, and where it is causing you the mos grief. There may be a farily simple way to resolve your issue, but without specific information, it is a bit difficult to troubleshoot.
The issue is that a user can (*inadvertently) end up with multiple itunes accounts. And this is a pain, especially in AppStore contexts. For instance: I had a account. I bought a new laptop and in the signup was ambushed with a "do you want to create an an account" message (it's free)". so i apparently said "yes", not realizing the implications --
And now I have two AppStore accounts: and some of my apps are in one; and others are in another. Some apps I've bought twice.
This is especially bad in regards to the Mac AppStore, because when I am logged in as one account, only the apps or assets for that account will get auto-updates. So again: I have to play the login-logout game every few days -- if only to save me from those pesky "Updates Available" messages that keep popping in my face every day or two (*oh, which account do i need to be in to update this app or that? PS, it's always the other one.)
So I just don't get it:
- Why can't you merge accounts
- Why can't you "push" assets from one account to another (thus deleting them from the original, so only one version persists.)
I like the SAME PASSWORD option - it can solve it for me and I can move on without complaining about Apple, without really knowing their reasons. If they ever jump in and allowing merging, that will be better, but is not on the table now.
Thank you gail from maine, for a simple fix. I have other stuff to do and its great to have a way to move past this mess. There are plenty others waiting!
So is there still no solution to this issue? I'm sure I'm not the only one who saw something about Apple changing their policy on apple ID's and that they now needed to be email addresses (probably around the time of icloud introduction). So I created a new apple ID that was my email account. And then when some subsequent login attempt with my old (non email) id prompted me to change it to an email address, I tried, but failed because that email address was taken. _Of course_ it was taken. It is mine, and one I created because I thought I had to. Now how can I actually use it instead of the one that used to be perfectly acceptable per Apple's policies, carrying over what is attached to the id they don't like any more?
I do know that Apple ID's and tied content can be split.
Apple will not admit this is possible but Court orders in divorce or similar situations force their hand because those laws override your private contract Terms with Apple as property is divisible by statute in priority over property stated as not divisible by contract. I have seen this so ordered and granted.
I think in the future we will see Apple ID merging, or at least aliasing, but I susepct fraud concerns (very legitimate) and DRM issues are vexing the capacity.
I don't think Apple is being "lazy" but they have legitimate concerns about proving identity. I suspect the legacy iTools/.Mac/MobileMe and DRM iTunes purchases make for a horrible stew of verification.
Yes, it is fairly obvious that they have to do it under some circumstances and thus they have to be able to do it. But those circumstances just don't relate to what lowly customers need or what their changing policies break...
My case would be simple to resolve, since there is no content/apps/DRM attached to the email-address version of my AppleID. And it is even the same email address that is associated with my previous AppleID that is not itself an email address and thus not usable as an icloud id. All I need to do is either delete the existing but unused email-address id version so the other one can be converted to it. It would be even better if the conversion just worked anyway as long as you have the passwords to both. But, Apple and I seldom agree on the concepts of being user-friendly...
Posting in case Apple sees how many people have this issue and post about it.
I had my original Apple ID, and then created a new one at some point in the past due to some sign on issue at the time. Now I have two with about the same amount of purchases on each.
I have been able to get all the content into one library (by copying the files, as has been suggested here), so it hasn't been a problem until now. I'm trying to use iCloud to use AirPlay, and now of course only half my iTunes-purchases show up on AirPlay: the half which belongs to the ID I'm signed with at that moment. It's very frustrating, and I'd love to sync the accounts.
From what I understand, iTunes Match would fix this, right? You can access any song you have in your library, regardless of which iTunes account it belongs to (or even if it isn't from the iTunes Store at all), via iCloud and therefore AirPlay. Just want to make sure I understand that correctly. Seems like a good deal, especially since I also have a large population of music ripped from my CD collection...would be great to be able to hear those on all my devices over my network.
As I understand it, this is no real merge operation:
- It will only work for documents and settings.
- You have to manually transfer most of the data (iCloud documents)
- It won't work for transfering purchases from the old account which I figure is what most people are interested in (iTunes App Store, App Store purchases).
- The author mentions that you basically abandon your old account after having made the move.
Yes, it doesn't help my case where my itunes account is tied to a non-email login that was a perfectly fine apple id when I set it up, but I created one with my email address when I heard that would be necessary for icloud accounts. And now I can't convert the old one because the new one already exists. Of course it exists - it's mine.
I agree with patte & LesMikesell -- this latest proposed solution does not address the problem with App and media purchases (ie with asset management).
It is perhaps worth noting that MacOS and iOS have got somewhat better on this issue since this thread opened: now there is improved support for multiple accounts. But still: one has to constantly log out and log in, switching accounts, to keep apps updated.
Seems like given the path Apple has taken, a simple solution might be to allow iTunes and AppStore to remain signed in to more than one account at a time.
