Apple is recommending that we use 1 Apple ID for iCloud and Purchases.  I want to do that.  However I have 2 IDs now.  An Apple ID that I use for iTunes which is not an email address.  The second ID is my .mac/MobileMe address (which is an email address, or 2 addresses, technically.)  I would like to continue with my iTunes ID, since all my purchases are tied to that one.  How can I tie that ID to my MobileMe and hence iCloud.  I have 7 more months of iCloud free that I will lose if I just bail on the .me address.

I am confused here.

It looks like I'm in the same boat... I THINK I can dump my MobileMe account (I don't use that email address) and sync everything to my iTunes Apple ID before I get in too deep with iCloud.

I can't believe how much of a headache this process has been so far.

I am going to do the same, but I have to throw away 6 mos of free iCloud, which stinks.  Also if I remember correctly this is a problem because they wouldn't let me use my existing apple ID (the short one) when I signed up for .mac as it was not an email address.  Arf.

You can use 2 apple ids with iCloud. The MobileMe email address will be your apple I'd to sign into and begin the set up with the ios5 and iCloud. Once you gave mcompleted the set up, go to settings, store, and put in your user name and password that is attached to your iTunes account and that way you can use both email addresses with iCloud. Please click on the link to get a better understanding.

Scroll does to MobileMe accounts. I hope this helps!

I have it setup with two different accounts now (iTunes Apple ID and @me Apple ID), but I'd like to consolidate on one now before I get even more dependent on two seperate Apple ID's.

  • Zbrina Level 1 Level 1 (10 points)

If you click on the link I provided, apple states that 2 cannot be consolidated into 1. Sorry. I would like to do the same as well.

So if you have an old e-mail address then you can use that to start up iOS-5 & iCloud?  Then go into iTunes and use that Apple ID to set up iTunes with iCloud?

When @mac migrated over to MobileMe we kept the old e-mail address and it worked with the same name but  So in reality it was one account but you could use either.  Is that the case with iCloud?  Would I still have my original embedded within the iCloud account as it had done with MobileMe?

Who can answer all these questions?  Applecare, MobileMe or the Genius bar?

  • Zbrina Level 1 Level 1 (10 points)

Yes you are correct. The applies identical to the

I'm having the same issue. when i went into my new apple id that was created by icloud it said the email address was validated by a different account. After some digging i found it was the xxx apple id which hasnt been deleted. I would have assumed when i moved over from to icloud it would have deleted the old account and set up the new one. I seem to have icloud synced to the account and itunes set up for the xxx account but apple could really do with merging them!

  • atomicluck1 Level 1 Level 1 (30 points)

So does that mean that once I'm over on iCloud I'll have both &  Or will it only be &

In either case what am I using to set up iCloud? or

  • atomicluck1 Level 1 Level 1 (30 points)

This is getting way to complicated

Where do you go to get real time answers?  MobileMe, Applecare or the Genius bar?

For that matter can you upgrade to iOS-5 without messing with iCloud?

  • joelfromnorwich Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

You will have a your normal appleId for itunes (John_doe) and then for icloud.

I've given up now. isnt working any more either.

I have emailed itunes support via the (not very) express lane

for itunes as icloud and mobileme wanted me to chat for which i was put in a massive queue.

its getting on for 3am now and I have to be up in 3 hours so i'll see what tomorrow brings.

This is shockingly bad. Did they not test this while in beta???

I am in the same boat.

Here, this link should answer the question for everybody:

Same boat here too. Giving me ****. Would like an update once they asllow us to merge AppleIDs or at least transfer your app & music purchases accross to the newer AppleID. Grr.

Yes this is an known issue Apple is expecting a great number of users to have to do (currently – there is semi-substantiated rumours they are designing a Apple ID merging system; but I'll believe that when I see it).

I (and almost everyone I know) have an issue like this:

Before we signed up to we all had our iTunes Apple ID's. But annoyingly, Apple automatically sets-up a new Apple ID for all email addresses as well. So we all had:

    (1) our original Apple ID: "whatever" (usually we used a NON-email address for this, eg. ""firstname.lastname")

Then we went into and made the contact email our new address.

    (2) then we ALSO had the auto set-up Apple ID, always the full email: eg.

We all ignored this Apple ID, and NEVER used it to log into anything Store related (just used for the email/contacts/etc. set-ups).

For this new stuff you should do this:

    (3) make sure you use the FULL email (ie. example #2 above) for the set-up and use of your Apple ID for anything "iCloud" related.

    (4) make sure you use only the ALIAS part of the email [just the front bit before the @, in my case above] (ie. example #1 above) for the set-up and use of your Apple ID for anything "iTunes" related (basically all the stores, iTunes/Mac App Store).

    - on iOS devices go into Settings>Store and log-in using your iTunes Apple ID there.

    - on Macs, in iTunes AND the Mac App Store, make sure your logged-in using your iTunes Apple ID there.

So yes, you have to use two Apple ID's (one for iCloud, one for iTunes/MAS) for the moment.

This is annoying as they are (a) forcing you to use TWO Apple ID's, & (b) they are forcing you to use the full email address for your iCloud Apple ID (though perhaps understandable, as everyone is being issued a for the iCloud service, so this may help people to remember the exact email domain address they are using when logging in).

Hope this helps. — well, at least until Apple fix so accounts can be merged in the future sometime, one wonders! ;-)
