Just to clarify my earlier post dated Oct 23, 2011 - my iTunes library was completely wiped after about a week of successful syncing both to iCloud and my computer.

Thoughts and insights into why this happened would be greatly appreciated.

If you have lost your photos on your iphone after updating to ios5, I have a Mac computer and I found where itunes stores the pictures from my phone onto my computer.  They are in the Library - the one in the Home, not the Library on Macintosh HD.  Here is what I did:

    1. Finder/Home (under Places)/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup (there were 2 folders in Backup)

    2.  Click on the documents in the Backup folders - my photos were in the second folder, each document was a pic

    3.  When you click on a photo in the Backup photo, it will open the photo in Preview.  You can go to File/Save or you can go to Edit/Select All/Save and then paste it into an email or Pages document, and then drag the photo into iphoto.

Have to double checked to make sure you are logged in the way you normally are?  If someone logged you out and a different user is logged in, you may be looking at their iTunes library which could be empty.

If that's not it, I'd suggest searching for your iTunes Music Libary.xml file.  Once found, you could check to see that iTunes is pointed at it in settings.

Just as an update,  SSDD (same s***, different day).  I've tried it all and nothing works.  What a POS.

Apologies if anyone else has said this before, but I haven't read the whole of this thread (or any others for that matter). I had the same problem with "An error occurred whilst restoring..." etc. I could connect my iPhone OK (OS X 10.6.8, iTunes 10.5), and it would sync and work fine once I had cancelled the error message. After poking around a bit I found two folders that I deleted (well, put somewhere safe at least!) - now my iPhone syncs fine without error messages (and without hours of restoring agony).

The first directory was: ~/Library/iTunes/Mobile Backups/123456AA1AA.

    {the last part of this will be different in each case}

The second was my old backup in the usual place: ~/Library/Application Support/MobileSync/Backup.

Note that the first directory and the old backup were of similar size to the regular backup, so deleting these has saved me ~7 gb of disk space if nothing else. I suspect that the culprit was actually the first directory (and then most likely RestoreState.plist within this directory).

Hi! I use Macbook Pro + 10.5 itunes, had the same error for about an hour and a half. itunes could not complete recovery from backup. It also looked like there was no backup only something from 1/10/2011 instead of 24/10/2011.

After fully resseting my iPhone 4 (holding down 2 keys) it finally worked worked however dialog box showed it did not. iTunes went into loop mode and was not responding, All I could see was turrning sign next to iPhone on the left sidebar.

I forced quit and tried it again and then iTunes said straight away that it is recovering Movies and Pictures. Now everything is back on my device.

It sure looks like it is simly timeout error and if you try to recover from backup, your iphone restarts and it says there is an error, just unplug it, restart, and connect it again. That worked for me, dialog boxes were just misleading.

    Hope that helps.

Unfortunately now that Steve Jobs is gone (RIP) everyone at Apple is slacking off.  He would be appalled to see all the issues with the iOS5 upgrades that we are all experiencing.  Valuable data/memories are lost!  I tried to update to iOS5 and it was taking over 10 hours in its very first step (backup data), so I decided to stop the process and click on the "cancel" button.  Well now another 8 hours have passed and it is taking forever to CANCEL?  I probably lost everything too.  It is STILL "canceling" and who knows how many more hours it will go.  Are you kidding me?!  The high quality products and services that Jobs worked so hard to offer his customers, are going down the drain in this one clean sweep.  iOS5 is terrible!  Great concept, but terribly executed!

Not sure how? Just glad he's not whining at me any more! Hope you all find a solution soon this is terrible publicity for apple! Pull your fingers out APPLE! We pay good money for supposedly top products! Sort it out!!

I upgraded to ios5 got the -50 message, using itunes 10.5 on XP or possibly any windows.

If you notice 3 processes consuming 100% CPU MDcrash..., AppleMobileDeviceHelper.exe and/or APSDaemon, try running this command from a command prompt "netsh winsock reset".  Afterwards you might see you now have the option to restore from a backup by right clicking on the device. I'd copy your backup files to another directory first though. They are at C:\Documents and Settings\[User]\Application Data\Apple Computer\MobileSync\Backup. It might keep giving failure messages, but it will ask you to sign into iTunes, and you will have restore options not available before.

The command was lifted from another post, and so was the backup path. I will credit both later. This is up all night for me trying to save my wife's iPad before she has to go to work. I'll also clear up the process later.

I hope this solution works for some of you as it has for me.

After IOS5 update I couldn't sync my music or photos to my iPhone 4, (even thoough the data storage indicator in iTunes suggested that the data was on the phone)

The following steps sorted my issues out.

1: Restore iPhone in iTunes and keep connected.

2: N.B.  Do not restore from back up, but set up as new phone. You can rename it later.

3: Sync Phone  (all apps restored for me at this point, but still no photos or music)

4: If not already there, Click on "iPhone 4" in device list in iTunes

4: Click on "Music" tab. Select individual playlists you want to sync, one at a time and then sync phone each time.

I know that could be quite tedious if you have loads of playlists but they did appear one by one after each sync.

5: Click on "Photos" tab and follow step 4.

Good luck, this drove me nuts for 10 days, and took me about 3 hours to complete, including reorganising of apps and folders, plus app settings. We shouldn't have to jump through so many hoops and apple need to test their os upgrades a lot more before presenting them to us.

I don't claim to be an expert, but as it worked for me I felt obliged to share it with you all.

So I didnt update and found I was having tons of problems receiving text message (I text alot) so I gave in and update last night. I lost EVERYTHING!!!! I love my ringtones, my music and my apps. Even my purchased apps. I use my ringtones cause I am partially deaf and now I cant hear my phone ringing. I see in my itunes under my device in my ringtones tab that they are there but when I go to settings on phone I DO NOT SEE THEM ANYWHERE. HELP me please!!!!! Also I heard there would be text apps that we could customize. I bought one two days before I updated and IT IS GONE!!! No history of me buying it. ALL of my apps dissappeared all my music. HELP ME PLEASE. Very new to the iphone world and I really like the old technology less problems it seems.

    Same itunes message here.

I don't dare to delete backup as I've done several backups after the upgrade.

The message is really annoying and dangerous...

Are you certain that you didn't just get lucky on pressing delete backup with no consequences?

    Thank you in advance

PS Does delete backup actually delete your latest backup or the interrupted backup?
