Q: Updated to iOs5 lost everything! Help?

So I updated my phone to iOS5 and this is what happens. I lose everything. Cannot restore from backup, nothing. Heres the rundown :

This is the message I get when I plug it in

"iTunes was interrupted while restoring the contents of the iPhone “Gayla's iPhone”. Would you like to restore this iPhone again now?"

So I click "Continue Restore"

Then I get this "An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-50)"

Whenever I try to restore it from the back up from earlier, it says that it is not compatible and that I cannot use it, or that it is corrupt.

So I click Restore and of course it erases everything (there is nothing on it anyway because it already erased it all)

So we go through that process then I get this :

" The iphone could not be restored. An internal error occured." ( of course it did...)

The back up is on here, because whenever I go into prefference > Devices.. I can see the back up and its what I need but I cannot get it to my phone. How do I get it on there.

I have one idea but I don't know if it's the right one,

Restore it to the older/latest version of iOS that I had (not iOS5) and then restore it from the backup, THEN try to the update again.

Is that right or is there an easier way to do this? Really appreciate your help, as I have lost everything, text message, apps, contacts, pictures. And this is stuff that cannot be replaced.

I am electronically challenged. Even worse I go to my bestfriends funeral on the 29th and plug phone in on the 30th to back it up etc. and it wouldn't let me do anything until I updated it with the ios5. So I agree and the entire phone does some weird auto thing and it deleted  pictures, music, contacts, I MEAN EVERYTHING!!!! So I try to fix and nothing is helping. I go to phone store they got a building full same dang problem as me! They don't know anything and tell me I have to contact apple who is closed! GRR! I am distraut beyond anything over this worried that I won't be able to get it back. The contacts alone are incredibly important to me as they have medical for the kids etc that I don't have other access to. Is this stuff all missing forever? Does anyone know who I need to go through or contact to recover the lost data? It even deleted my books! man I loved this phone and now after the weird hatful update not so sure and EXTREMELY dissappointed in the service fro mboth apple and service carrier.

For those who lost their content you can try this link: http://support.apple.com/kb/TS1967

It helped me get my stuff back. But it's only linked to iTunes updated dates, meaning there is a backup only when you updated your iTunes.

Also, to help you out, you can drop your app folder, music, etc. into the Library tab of itunes to update iTunes with your media. It looks like I'm back to normal after I did all this.

    I have an iPhone 4S.

I get the impression that apple is more interested in vendor lock-in to their services than they are in satisfying their customers. Someone need's to create a version of Android that works on an iPhone then we'll be free. You can already get a free replacement for the SW on an iPod.

I tried what you suggested, but I can only see one picture out of more than 700. They all come up as plain text after that one picture. Is there any other suggestion you have for me to be able to open them again and save them to my laptop? Thank you so much for helping me find them with your post! All hope is not lost jst yet!!

I've got a iphone 3, which back up before upgrading to ios5

    restoring got me error 50

Then I sync and got my last back-up, (the previous before the upgrade), which was 1 month ago. so I am missing all my new contacts, text, etc of the last month.

When I connect, it still shows me unfinished restoring, please continue!

Solution to the "lost everything" after the update to iOS 5.0.1

I have a solution to everyone, including for those who doesn't have the "app" button on their sidebar of the iTunes.

I randomly found this solution, and hopefully, it could be of some use.

    Step One:

         Open iTunes

(I know, this could be a difficult step =P)

    Step Two

         Open Purchased

(It's locationed on the left hand side of itunes on the sidebar)

    Step Three

         Click on "Download Previous Purchased"

(Located on the bottom right hand corner of iTunes)

    Step Four

Re-download all of your lost files

              ***INCLUDING*** Music!!

    Step Five

Rejoice, for the Lord God almighty is an amazing God to install this part of the program inside the head of the programer!

Did you ever fix this? How can you people give us so little control over a product we bought to serve ourselves?

We are not chattle. We are individual human beings with individual needs.

If you only want a sterilized use of the iphone, don't release it to us filthy, unwashed individuals you show such contempt for.

This case is examplary for the reason why I prefer to manually keep a backup of as much of my iPhone data as possible. I use third-party tools to copy iPhone contacts to my Windows Address Book.

I also force-synced twice with iTunes before I upgraded the iPhone to iOS5. This ensured iTunes made automatice iOS backup twice to ensure I have at least a couple of backup entries of my notes and calendars from which I can choose and that at least a single of my latest iOS backup entries successfully restores after the upgrade.

No need to say that ensuring ALL of the iPhone media tracks are within iTunes is a primary must.

This is exactly the SAME situation that happened to me - do you think that by now, that APPLE would have seen these discussion threads and Installed some kind of FAILSAFE?  I cannnot even restore my IPHONE from an old backup - have to call the APPLE GURUS in the morning.

Keep in touch - is your first name Dave?  If so, I may be one of your customers that you provided customer support with Microsoft products last year - and yes, losing everything on my IPHONE including your phone number is definitely devastating.

    THanks,

    Debbie

Seems simple, did the downloads. Now reloading on the iphone - restore as new? Sorry never done this before and I don't want to screw up any chances of getting my contacts/settings back. *sigh* what a pain. Thanks for the help!

Also, it didn't seem to back up as when it prompts me to back up, it only gives me the option to back up from my ipad! Did I just loose all my photos, contacts etc too?

At the end of my back up, there was an error and when trying to restore I got the -50 message and can't restore. How do I get that back?

    Thanks RegleFoncee!

I got exactly the same error (-50).

Shame on Apple. Just updating the iOS caused to lose all my personal data (Contacts, Apps, photos, etc.). All my iPhone and iTunes are made by Apple. When I called the support, they even said I needed pay service fee to them for helping me to diagnose and solve the issues.
