Q: Updated to iOs5 lost everything! Help?

So I updated my phone to iOS5 and this is what happens. I lose everything. Cannot restore from backup, nothing. Heres the rundown :

This is the message I get when I plug it in

"iTunes was interrupted while restoring the contents of the iPhone “Gayla's iPhone”. Would you like to restore this iPhone again now?"

So I click "Continue Restore"

Then I get this "An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-50)"

Whenever I try to restore it from the back up from earlier, it says that it is not compatible and that I cannot use it, or that it is corrupt.

So I click Restore and of course it erases everything (there is nothing on it anyway because it already erased it all)

So we go through that process then I get this :

" The iphone could not be restored. An internal error occured." ( of course it did...)

The back up is on here, because whenever I go into prefference > Devices.. I can see the back up and its what I need but I cannot get it to my phone. How do I get it on there.

I have one idea but I don't know if it's the right one,

Restore it to the older/latest version of iOS that I had (not iOS5) and then restore it from the backup, THEN try to the update again.

Is that right or is there an easier way to do this? Really appreciate your help, as I have lost everything, text message, apps, contacts, pictures. And this is stuff that cannot be replaced.

Those information are personal information, they were not stored into the itunes store, they were only stored into both your iDevice and in backups on iTunes. If you loose both your backups and your storage information on your iDevice, then that information is gone. iTunes can only restore what information it has. Other than your purchased items, I can't see how you could get the rest of your storage information back. I'd suggest that storing personal information onto e-mail would be best, I don't think there's a way to transfere the personal data to your e-mail other than to do that manually, however, if you set up your notes to save to an e-mail, then notes is an exception to this rule that I know of.

I don't know how you do it, but you have to "put" all of your data to the computer then update your apple device it will not erase the data if you do that. Hope it helped. ^.^

I found an old backup for my IPHONE in November 2011, but never did find a RECOVERY for what happened to me.

Yes, the IOS 5.0 upgrade took off and then BAM so did the SYNC on the IPHONE = wiped out my contacts on my computer and on my IPHONE>

I went ahead and restored the old version and tried to recreate the lost numbers from all of my past AT&T phone bills - had to call the numbers on some to find out who they were - not pleased at all - told APPLE they should hae fail-safes build in that does the SYNC first before the IOS anything upgrade.

Careful - there is another upgrade just out IOS 5.1.1 upgrade.

Good luck - hope  your brother doesn't hurt you too badly.  Debbie

    iTouch Update ERASED 60 GIGS!!!!!

This is rediculous!!! What type of "UPDATE" erases EVERYTHING when it fails?????? I just "Updated" my iTouch, it couldn't backup because I don't have 60 Gigs on my computer (and I'm sure no one else in MAC land does either! ) It updated the software, i guess failed... looked like it worked, then said it's returning to factory settings, found an old back up from three onths ago, then wiped my iTouch IN THAT ORDER. NO WARNING OR ANYTHING!!!

    So now what Cupertino!?!?!

Just FYI for everyone else. I use TouchCopy to backup everything up ever so often. I'm behind a number of months since my last backup. I can rebuild but will take days with custom album covers, song in/out modifications/playlist builds. AND my friend's AT&T Iphone doesn't get reception in Cupertino, CA. WHAT A JOKE APPLE !!!

Hi I have a very similar problem but my error message is (-10)

I've also lost everything because when i try to restore from backup it always ends up telling me something got disconnected and wasn;t able to complete.

Does anyone know if there's a solution to the -10 error?

    Hi All,

Last night I experienced the same sort of problem... I was absolutely gutted, after plugging in my iPhone 4 to upgrade my phone software in itunes and it started going through the process. After about an hour it said an error had occured and my phone went in to recovery mode. When it was plugged in to iTunes it said there was nothing left on the phone... it appeared to have been completely wiped and I could not even get on to my phone as there was the usb/ apple signs on the phone.

After reading a few of the threads above I managed to resolve the issue and it is now completely fixed! I thought i'd update this incase anyone else is having the same problem!

    1. When I plugged my phone in my mac and itunes had automatically backed up my phone (thank God!)

    2. To check the last update go to iTunes/ preferences/ devices and the last update will be on there... knowing this meant that it could be restored to that time and date...

    3. The thing I was petrified about was that my only choice was to restore my phone but what it does not tell you is that once you have pressed the dreaded button... it does give you the choice to go to your last back up... it does not say before hand!

    4. Choose the restore phone option, follow through the process and then it does allow you to opt for your latest back up...

Good luck all, apple need to fix this ASAP!

Contrary to popular belief, you cannot restore back to the iPhone, as far as I'm aware. But it is possible to get your stuff back, even without a backup. Look at these tutorials I found, for SMS/Text/Messages, Contacts, Calendar, Notes, Call History etc. So you CAN recover without backup, but only to your PC/Laptop.

In the future, it's always good practise to keep backups.

    Welcome to the forums Jamy.

It's always worth keeping an eye on the dates. You are responding to a post heading for two years old.  We've all done it, and we all continue to do it now and again.
