Q: Updated to iOs5 lost everything! Help?

So I updated my phone to iOS5 and this is what happens. I lose everything. Cannot restore from backup, nothing. Heres the rundown :

This is the message I get when I plug it in

"iTunes was interrupted while restoring the contents of the iPhone “Gayla's iPhone”. Would you like to restore this iPhone again now?"

So I click "Continue Restore"

Then I get this "An error occurred while restoring this iPhone (-50)"

Whenever I try to restore it from the back up from earlier, it says that it is not compatible and that I cannot use it, or that it is corrupt.

So I click Restore and of course it erases everything (there is nothing on it anyway because it already erased it all)

So we go through that process then I get this :

" The iphone could not be restored. An internal error occured." ( of course it did...)

The back up is on here, because whenever I go into prefference > Devices.. I can see the back up and its what I need but I cannot get it to my phone. How do I get it on there.

I have one idea but I don't know if it's the right one,

Restore it to the older/latest version of iOS that I had (not iOS5) and then restore it from the backup, THEN try to the update again.

Is that right or is there an easier way to do this? Really appreciate your help, as I have lost everything, text message, apps, contacts, pictures. And this is stuff that cannot be replaced.

    Hi guys,

I too was having the (-34) problem. I had 5,500 songs wiped twice by pressing "continue restore".

Once i managed to finally get all the songs back onto my iPhone, everytime I connected my iPhone to my laptop (purely to recharge the battery) iTunes would load up then I'd always get the message "iTunes was interrupted... etc" and gave me the [cancel] [continue restore] and [deletebackup] options.

Next time it happened I decided to bite my lip, cross my fingers and press the "delete backup" option.

It worked. Now I don't get the error message anymore.

Best advice I can offer (if you can call it that) is to persevere with it. Easier said than done, I know, but once that restore is done it feels better.

    Hope this helps.

Hey thanks, glad someone had the guts to do it. I've been hovering my mouse over the delete button for days now. But couldn't actually click it, haha. I'm backing up and syncing again and then i will.

    Regards

I had the same thing happen.. I somehow just managed to get my contacts and apps back, I'm fine with re-syncing all of my music, however my pictures are no where to be found.

Does anyone know how to get pictures back since the restore from backup is useless.

    .

so, yeah. seeing a lot of peep's data getting hosed from this update. including myself.

this is a failed update regardless of how many new and "world's first" features there are. i wish i had kept the last version.

i can deal with the loss of "corrupt data," able to channel my anger better than my 10 yr-old son. he had games on there that he spent so much time leveling and achieving goals -- all wiped and dashed. he even spent allowance money (with my supervision) on buying "gold" and extra stuff that the game makers offer to improve his games.

gone. all gone with a click of an "agree" button. there is no way to get any of that back, and i'm above moderate savvy with this stuff.

i even tried to restore backup sets from a few days ago, then a months ago, and everytime, i get the same thing: data is corrupt or similar discouraging error message. it's as though this update just doesn't know what to do with personalization data and all those apps data. or it tried to and completely fncks it all up. every game, every app, every infromation that mattered, gone.

what the fnck happen, apple? did you not have enough time to beta? did you think siri and newsstand were so fncking cool that you had to push this out the door, and deliver a destructive update?

what's your next plan to safeguard your loyal users' data? because that back-up ideas you have -- icloud or icouldcareless or iwhateverthehellyouwanttocallit -- is a fail.

what does your term of use actually say in there (i never read it): "if your data is wiped by our negligence, tough **** because you don't read this stuff anyway."

Having the same problem here, and it's very frustrating. When I upgraded to IOS 5, I lost everything.

Was able to re-sync, recovered pictures, and most of my contacts, but NONE of my messages, many with phone numbers, web sites, etc. Tried synching to an earler version, but received messages stating iTunes could not restore the iPhone because the backup was corrupt or not compatible with the iPhone that is being restored.

If I retry, the message states iTunes was interrupted, would I like to restore…..

Then I get the error -50 message, too.

Has anyone tried iPhone Backup Extractor (iPhonebackupextractor.com)?

If so, what were the results?

Appreciate any help on theis subject, thanks!

I had the same problem and tried the same things to restore lost data. The sad part is I lost all my photos and videos that were not yet transferred to a computer. ALL ARE IRREPLACABLE! I am angry about this and more angry that I am just beyond the 90 warranty so I have no free support to see if there is any way to retrieve this data. This will be the last update I do until I know people have had the changes and figured out all the errors.

iOS5 is a horror story. Since OS5 was available and as I sync'ing my 3GS, I decided to upgrade to the OS5. In the midst it gave a message asking me if I wanted to restore my phone. SO I canceled the upgrade. Repeated attempts gave the same message, so I thought this may be a new undocumented feature for the software, so I decided to continue.

Much to my horror my phone was wiped out clean to the factory setting. Though I had backed up the phone, it never prompted me for a password which I never set during back up. So when it asked me which back up I wanted to restore, I obviously chose the 'new' much to my dismay that it now needed a password that I neve set in the first place. Apple id password would not work ans so did three previous ones. Finally I gave up and chose to set up anew iPhone.

Whilst my contacts are backed up to my own server and outlook ad Yahoo, contacts were recovered, but lost all my notes, calendar entries, photos and videos (they were backed up to my pc so could retrieve them).

Now after setting up my Yahoo account, I cannot see any messages beyond 09/20/2011 though I think the phone receives mail from Yahoo server due to the Push setting. I hear the 'ding' each time mail arrives, but there is none to display and the mail count is stuck to (52) mails though I have 105 in my Yahoo inbox.

Fortunately ny Outlook mail boxes seem to work fine on the IMAP setting.

Overall mail sending has slowed down and it now takes forever to send messages from my email accounts.

iOS5 seems to be the worst upgrade I ever had and does not seem to be a tested updgrade.

Lessons learnt: upgrade with caution, preferably not, if you are happy with your older version.

    Buy an Android!

iPhone 3GS probably my first and last Apple product. there are more superior products on the market which are more reliable than these over priced "white elephants" which are self destructive.

Maybe it's Apple's way to render your product totally useless with a destructive OS, so you are forced to boost their sales by being compelled to buy a new product or some extended warranty and have to wait in line to be served.

I am switching to either an HTC or a Samsung, they are much superior products just like my Motorola Xoom. Glad I stayed away from the iPad2, as it would have been another nightmare for the hype.

I managed to restore my backup after suffering (-50) error.

Basically I copied the iPhone back-ups from my PC to my Mac and manually restored in iTunes.

The restore was sucesfull, the only problem is the backup process musn't have run correctly because it only had data from late March..

So looks like my contacts and App data for the last 8 months is gone forever.

I won't be buying another Apple product, thats for sure!

    Update

I managed to restore my iphone perfectly.

I believe the process of upgrading has changed.

Step 1: ios device is backed up

Step 2: Download and installation of IOS5

Step 3: Reboot and restore of settings from backup

Step 4: Sync of Apps to new IOS5

Because all my apps were missing after step 3 I was not syncing since I believed it would not keep my app folders (categories)

When I finally decided to let it sync (even though it came up with errors in my previous post)

I found that it restored perfectly.

So I am happy to say that even though it thinks there was an interuption and recovery issue it still recovered correctly.

I hope this helps some of you that are still experiencing issues.

    Also,

Once the update is done, everything is wiped so you have to configure your settings again (manually syncing your iphone etc) and this includes having to re-tick the Sync Apps and Sync Photos option.

    Hope that helps.

Ah, but my iTouch will no longer sync. The Sync button isn't even active any more. And it doesn't look as if Apple is fixing this any time soon. ARRRGH!

On the other hand, I am really enjoying my new Android.

No luck so far. I haven't gotten the chance to really mess with it the last couple days. But, I am thinking about taking my macbook and iphone to the genius bar and seeing if there is any possible way that they can help me. I don't care about music, I will re-sync that, but contacts, pictures and app data would be a HUGE deal. I'm still checking, don't give up yet! Sorry if I am slow to reply I have been very very busy, But, I'm still listening Thank you everyone for you helpful input, I really appreciate it and I know everyone else does too. Thanks guys!

Well i cracked it so hope this can help others. One issue maybe that your phone is too 'full' for it to sync properly.. I went to settings in iTunes and cleared 'cache' and 'warnings' which by itself didn't work. But then I cleared all my music off the phone, deleted unwanted photos and video, basically clearing half the space on the phone. I switched the phone off. Re-booted then re-synced the music but still left 3 or so gigs of clear space. No more warnings and the phone is running fine. I hope I got this in the right order and that it helps everyone. It definitely worked for me.

If this does help please let me (and everyone else) know. If it doesn't try switching phone off after your unsuccessful attempt and try again
