No iCloud for XP

This really is not a smart move here

I'm no windows fan but i'm upgrading my wifes iPhone up to ios 5 the problem is her company laptop is XP

She works for a massive american company who have sales teams worldwide

The whole workforce has lapops with XP on every machine

They have just introduced the iPhone 4 in the past year as the company phone ditching blackberries

Not supporting XP here for her company is going to be a disaster here no doubt by now most of them will have updated & now none of them will be able to use the icloud service

Thats just the wifes company how many other companies large or small around the world have rolled out the iPhone as the company phone still use XP

That means for this to work all those companies would have to upgrade to either vista or 7 or even go ovr to Mac

I dont think Apple relise here to do that would cost some companies millions

This needs sorting quick really

Yes, many businesses small and large still use XP. I feel your wife's pain. I am very frustrated and in the same situation. I am a solo attorney and the icloud seemed awesome at first. However, I can't use it with my office PC. When I opened my practice in 2009 (bad timing), my IT guy sadvised that I needed XP because that was the most stable windows op system at the time.

In my case, if i want to use the cloud in the office, i would have to backup my entire computer and then reinstall every program after installing Windows 7. Not worth it to me. I would rather wait until the computer needs to be replaced in a year or two, so I wouldn't have to go thru this stressful procedure twice.

I have heard however, that with in 2-3 years, microsoft will no longer support xp at all. Maybe, thats part pf the reason Apple isnt offering the cloud with xp.

However, I can still use the cloud at home re my family media library.

XP can be updated to Vista and that can be updated to Windows 7.

XP to Windows7 is not possible. It requires to either format the harddisk or have Win7 archive the XP into a folder "windows.old".

But why bother with Windows 7 ? It's the same xxx as Vista and if you get a cheap vista business license, it will be supported until 2017. ( the home editions not : 2012 end of support ).

Its not really vista is a horrible OS 7 is marginally better XP is still miles better than both

I work with all these OS's including Mac, vista is by far the worst i have ever come across that is a personal opinion i'm sure there are people out there who think vista is a good OS

You can have access to your files by signing in to www.icloud.com you just cant sync calendars ETC from outlook which for businesses was a very very handy way of keeping up to date

Losing this feature especially for my wife as she is a manager she used this to keep her & her teams calendars up to date losing this is not going to go down well at all

Shame she was negotiating rolling out iPads for her team but this has just thrown a massive spanner in the works for that one

This may be the case but still a large proportion of window user use XP especially businesses. Sure in the next 2-3 years support for XP will be withdrawn by which time most people would have upgraded.

I have Win7 at home, Vista for my office and XP on my netbook (vista was no good for Netbooks).

I use the net book when I visit clients as more convenient and has good battery life. Have always synced my contacts and calender between all 3 devices and Iphone using mobile-me with no real problems.

Just moved everything to the Icloud and now find I can no longer sync with my netbook. This is a very poor show and something that should have been given a lot more thought. I thought Apple would have learnt from the early problems when Mobile Me was first introduced.

Just decided to see if I could find out how may PC users still run XP. Found this article -

http://www.tomshardware.com/news/Windows-XP-Windows-7-Windows-Vista-OS-Market-Sh are-xp,11412.html

whilst is dated October 2010 this would still indicate that XP market share as an OS is somewhere in the region of 50% still - over half of all PC users.

This would indicate to me that there could be 30-40% of Iphone users who will not be able to access iCloud!!!!

Interesting, so it appears Apple just restricts the MSI and it will run on XP. This does not surprise me and would guess is limited risk, as we are just talking about contacts here. Good post, think you just swayed me to get my first iphone. Last few gaps were a good sync with Outlook, last thing is making sure the icals make it onto my calendar when opened on my phone.

The iCloud setup hack for Windows XP:

  1. DownloadiCloud Control Panel for Windows.
  2. Open iCloudSetup.exe file with WinRar or 7-Zip and extract.
  3. Navigate to and open the iCloud.msi or iCloud64.msi (for 64bit systems) with Orca.
  4. In the left table select LaunchCondition. Then change in the right table “VersionNT> = 600” to “VersionNT> = 200” and Save.
  5. Run modified iCloud.msi and install.
  6. Run iCloud Control Panel, located in the Windows Control Panel, and set up as you want.

And you’re done.

Good luck!
