it is part of iOS 5 its in regular messege but unless the person your texting has iOS5 it will just appear as a regular sms message

It is apart of the Message app on your iphone. Instead of sending the message to a phone number, you send it to an Apple ID (they have to have ios 5 and already activated iMessage)
Thanks Veronica.
So the free texting happens automatically if the receipt is known to have an iOS5 Device.
Cool. I thought it would be a separate app and all that that entails.
Cheers
Thanks Domm
I have the same question. I'm on a 3GS now running iOS5 and the message icon looks the same. But the app looks a little different than what the new iOS5 manual shows for "Messages."
How are we supposed to know if the person we want to text is using iOS5 (and vice versa)? I don't have a text plan and don't want to get dinged every time I send a message that won't be free.
You can go to your settings and go to message and turn off "send as an sms message if they dont have imessage"
When you create a new message it will have a blue chat bubble next to there name and that means they have iOS 5 and use imessage and the message bubbles are blue instead of green
i Have a question my imessage says not delivered when i try and send it to someone who has iOS 5 can anyone tell me why? Or how to fix it?
They have to go to their settings and activate iMessage too.
try connecting to a wifi, if you in a bad area i believe it relies on wifi if u have no data or cell connection available
they have activated it and how do you know for sure if its activated and i have wifi. ive also restored it no luck
Super. Thanks, everyone!
You know if its activated if they have iMessage (on) in the Messages setting and they have their apple id filled in the "Receive At"
What about having everything done (iOS5 in both iPhones and iMessage active) and still no iMessage appear between iPhones?
I am getting imessages, but there is no bubble against the contacts in my phonebook to say which contacts have imessage.....
No iMessage???
