I recieved the Gizmodo email, and tried to understand the options.

Please tell how it will sync contacts & calendars like we did in MobileMe. I am fine that my emails arrive at both devices unless deleted when first viewed on one. The server is functioning.

I am astounded that there are so many posts in about one day or day & half.  No true substitute for MM syncing makes me very troubled....

    I don't use Gizmodo.

I don't think so. Am up to date and all I can really use iCloud for is an email account.

Using google contacts and syncing with Mac for BU and syncing phone to Mac with wifi (while plugged in to power wire) managing to keep all synced.

If like some you want to be wireless why not sync the phone contacts with google direcley?

There is a new service from GOOGLE starting today. It is Google Drive.

There is an article about it on Gizmodo:

    http://gizmodo.com/5904653/what-is-google-drive?

One line in the article is very telling - "Though Apple's iCloud only caters to iOS users, the Google counterpart is open to all platforms."

If Google can do this for Everyone and Anyone, why can't Apple do it for loyal customers? And give Snow Leopard users iCloud syncing?

I guess Apple has enough FanBoyz for Lion (like Csound1) who can afford constant upgrades that the rest of us don't matter.

"Apple" sounds like "Rolex" toys for the rich and showoffs LOL :-))

Please explain how to keep contacts and calendars up to date on Macs, Pc's, iPads, etc using Google Drive? I don't seem to be able to find it at that link.

You don't use "Google Drive" you use "Google Mail (GMail)"  Once you have a gmail account this has contacts and calendares as well as mail.  On the iPhone you goto settings, mail/contacts/calendares,  add account, gmail add the account details and gives mail and calendars.  if you want contacts aswell you iver add your gmail account using the MS-Exchange settings and gmail settings or you sync with itunes and your addressbook on your mac that you have setup to sync with google.

TopSteve, is your recommendation to those wanting iCloud to use Google instead?, a brief answer will suffice.

I have no clue what you are asking, if indeed you are asking anything at all, try using less words.

    I will answer that one.

By all means, use Google if you do not want to upgrade to Lion, or do not want to spend the money for SOHO (an excellent though costly solution).

    Forget iCloud altogether.

  • teharatats Level 1 Level 1 (0 points)

To merely get an iCloud account, you need an iOS device (pad or phone running 4 or higher) And/OR a Mac running Lion or (I think) iTunes running on a Windows box.  And to install Lion on your Mac  you  need to do so from a Snow Leopard system.

I don't use SOHO but it won't set up an iCloud account, just works with it if you have one.

  • geoMH Level 1 Level 1 (5 points)

Some of us inquiring have an iCloud account, because we migrated using an iPhone or iPad w/ OS 5.

The Lion OS will NOT install in many still operating computers with Snow Leopard; iTunes is there by default.

Without the Lion OS, we are unable to sync wirelessly like with MobileMe account.

Apple now has planned obsolescence. I will not be forced to buy hardware now. I guess we were forced to make some changes back when OSX was introduced.  So be it.   Different conditions back then!

I do not plan to buy third party SOHO.  Posts here are going round in circles; there is no answer.

Don't believe me, call Apple Care Support. I did.  They do not read this forum.

The only option I have for calendars & contacts syncing is to use iTunes and my iPhone cable; select the device, and click on sync. In iPhone, you MUST go to settings > iCloud > and turn OFF claenders & contacts; otherwise duplicates will be made. That from Apple Support!

As I have said before, I thought I was done; there are no easy answers. I jumped in to post, because I see confusion, and a few suggesting something which is not possible.
