iOS 5 update deleted text messages

So I updated my iPhone 4 to iOS 5, turned it on after a long wait of restoring errors, and all my text messages are gone 😟 I never delete anything! HELP!

With any type of device like this there is always the potential to lose content. If you were only keeping the messages on your phone and not somewhere else then that is the chance you take.

I backed my phone up on Monday and then after two failed attempts yesterday I was able to update it. It backed it up before updating, but when it came time to restore it used the backup from Monday, not yesterday, so any texts I had since then were gone. Also most of the apps were gone and my music was gone. I just had to sync it with iTunes over wifi and it restored all the apps and music. The music icon is different and all videos are moved to the videos icon.

Music synced fine, photos synced fine. Zero text messages. I always do a back-up before doing any major os updates since there is always a chance of losing info. When I saw that the text messages didn't show up, I tried to do a restore from the last previous back-up I did, and after it was done, still no text messages, yet it has backed up all the last phone calls I've made. Weird. I hope there's a way to fix this.

char208,

I had the EXACT same issue as you. No text messages after upgrading to iOS 5 and coming across a bunch of errors during the process of upgrading.

If you go to your Spotlight search (the search screen that is to the left of your home screen), and you search for a word that would of been in one of your most recent text messages, the text message will appear in the search results. If you try to tap on the message, it'll bring you to the Messages application but it will not show the text message. It almost seems like the text message is still on the phone, but the Messages application does not know where they are or will not show it. Hopefully Apple will release a fix for this as I'm not wanting to lose 3 years worth of text messages.

Very interesting discovery, foad. I'm experiencing this alarming problem too, but you're right, I can search on recent texts. In fact this correlates to my own discovery that the sms db file "3d0d7e5fb2ce288813306e4d4636395e047a3d28" in my iPhone backups still shows a size of 13MB, which means the messages *are* there on the device.

Am I the only one who is NOT having any success with the discovery foad has shown/mbrtis has verified that works for him?

I search stuff and I get nothing.

Im thinking of restoring back to a backup in august and trying it, but from my trial earlier that didnt make any difference. No sign of text msgs anywhere.

@foad and @ mbrtis : did you guys succesfully update to iOs5 after your first try? My concern is that my initial attempt failed, and it took me about 3-4 times to initiate a restore and update that I FEEL I essecntially lost them then as the given backup was based on a faulty "restore" to begin with. (though everything else was saved)
