How do I tell Pages to save/retrieve to/from iCloud?

Background info:

I have Pages for iOS 5 installed on my iPhone

I have Pages installed on my Mac with OSX Lion 10.7.2

I successfully migrated from mobileme to iCloud.

The Problem:

I created a Pages document on my iPhone and it immediately uploaded to iCloud.

I go to my Mac, but cannot find the document in iCloud anywhere

I can't figure out what to do, to let Pages on my Mac automatically save documents to iCloud.

HELP ME!

iPhone 3GS, Mac OS X (10.7.1), PBG412, MacMini

From Macworld:

"Working on documents between a computer and an iOS device requires an extra step. To access your iOS documents from your computer, you will need to use a web browser and go to icloud.com/iwork. Once you sign in with your iCloud login information, you’ll be able to see all of your iOS documents; click a document to download it onto your computer. (You can choose to download documents in either iWork ’09, Microsoft Office, or PDF format.) To share a document from your computer to your iOS devices, you’ll need to drag and drop the document (which can be in either iWork ’09 or Microsoft Office format) from your computer into one of the iWork apps on the web browser. The document will then automatically appear on all your iOS devices."

That was definitely the answer :-) Seems a bit silly though...they should just build iCloud document access inside the iWorks apps when you try to open a file rather than having to select and download yourself first. The above is clumsy and hopefully they will change it.

However, I still cannot "Download Document" from iCloud as that option is greyed out!!

As a further note, I could not get PDF files to work, iCloud will not accept them.

Thank you for that information. Well, it seems like they didn't deliver then. I had the impression that there would at last be a seamless, hasslefree and automatic syncing between Macs and iOS-devices, when working on iWork-documents, but that solution is clumsy. It is easier to use Dropbox then, or iDisk for that matter.

I have to say that I am disappointed by this. It works between iOS-devices and that is fine, but I am not going to work on manuscripts in Pages, using the iPhone. The idea was to work either on the iPad or the MacBook or the iMac, but well, I guess it is back to Dropbox then. Or using the iDisk as long as we have it.

Hopefully they will get an update to iWork which will solve this. I hope as many as possible will send them feedback to tell them that this isn't good enough. I sent feedback about Pages at least:

ITA. I was hoping iCloud would replace Dropbox for me, but this is a no-go. Having to use Safari to download files on my Mac every time I want to work on something? And every time I create a new document I will need to upload it? Forget it.

Basically this feature is for iOS devices to be always in sync with each other. You can access the docs from your Mac and upload new ones, but really you are dealing with 2 environments, the "cloud" where your iOS devices store the documents in the iWork apps (and sync with each other) and the old fashioned desktop Mac environment. It's too bad that at Apple didn't get it together to combine these two for a totally seamless iWork experience amongst all devices. Maybe this feature will come, but I've learned not to hold my breath in these sorts of cases (it took 2 years to get cut/paste on the iPhone).

Back to Dropbox for syncing between my Macs!

I was fully expecting some sort of iCloud browser in all the iWork apps, and I spent some time poking around in Pages on the Mac looking for it. Then checking for late iWork software updates and all that.

Unfortunately it seems to be the case that iCloud syncing doesn't actually exist for Pages (or Numbers, or Keynote). It's all manual drag-&-drop into/from your web browser.

And if you look closely, the iCloud info never actually shows any of the Mac apps as being in the sync loop. It's all limited to documents bouncing between iOS devices. Oops.

Caveat emptor, I guess, but I don't think it's unreasonable to have expected "Effortlessly sync your Pages documents between your devices" to have automatically included Pages on my main device, my Mac.

Exactly my thoughts, too. How reasonable is it to assume that persons would work on huge manuscripts on the iPhone? Which leaves the iPad. Maybe a family would have more than one iPad and even well-off people might have more than one, but normally a person will only have one. Thus, the effortless syncing would be between your iPad and your very same iPad. What's the use in that?

Any logical person would assume that "effortless syncing" and "take your documents with you" would indicate that the Macs are included. A MacBook is also a mobile device and my iMac is a device, too.

The more I think of this, the more I am ****** off by it. It borders to false advertising. I cannot remember any keynote or article where it has been explicitly stated that this effortless syncing would be limited to iOS-devices and that Macs would be left with some ridicolous and clumsy solution.

Well, the only way to let Apple know is to give them as much feedback as possible. And of course, one can hope that someone from Cupertino would read this. too.

Otherwise, iCloud works as promised, which goes to say smoothly and effortlessly. And if they want, I am sure that they will find a way to include iWork on Mac OS X-devices into this. They have proved earlier that if they really go for something, they manage.

Very upsetting that there is no way to create a document on my Macbook Pro using Pages and have it automatically upload to iCloud and be available on all other devices. The fact that this was left out is really a glaring omission on Apple's part.

Pres Nevins comments are dead on. We expected this feature when Apple said 'Effortlessly sync your Pages documents between your devices.' How could we not have expected this? This was absolutely the one thing I looked forward to the most with iCloud. I am so disappointed.

Come on Apple. Get with it and do this the right way.

I was sure that the capability to include OSX-based documents was announced at the WWDC 2011 keynote address by Steve Jobs. That's why I purchased iPages and iNumbers! So I went back and looked at that part of the keynote address. After demonstrating using iCloud to view/change documents on an iPhone and an iPad, Steve then talked about providing APIs to developers to use iCloud in their own applications. Then, at about 1:36 into the keynote, he said: "It (documents in the cloud) works across all IOS devices, and Macs and PCs too". He said that with the attached slide being displayed behind him:

User uploaded file

So it seems to me that we were all led to believe that the ability to seamlessly access documents across ALL devices (including OSX computers) would be provided.

So what happened to this capability?

Oct 14, 2011 9:13 AM in response to Retired In Sarasota

Retired, unfortunately it seems the "Mac and PCs too" refers to the ability to access documents on icloud.com, where apparently you can upload and download the docs that are synced between your iOS devices.

Like others who have posted above, I can't see how this workflow is going to be useful to many people. Working with Pages and Numbers is, I daresy, done mostly on desktop computers. Having access to documents from an iPad or iPhone is useful when one is away from home, for sure, but Apple has made the mistake of leaving desktops out of the loop in the new iWork syncing scheme.

When I create or edit a Pages document on my Mac, I would like to have it synced across all my devices. Period. And vice versa, of course. The way Apple has implemented it, though, is pretty much 100% useless for me. Such a shame, as I had high hopes for this feature.
