THIS WORKED FOR ME. I've trying to make it work for 5 days. Thank you so much!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi,
I have recently discovered the same problem and since this was posted a while ago I was wondering if you had found and cure, an dif so what it was? As it is now frustrating me.
I had this problem out of the blue today and tried a bunch of different fixes. What ended up working for me was to "re-activate" my phone. I can see there are various different providers that you all are using. I have a US Verizon Wireless iPhone 4S and I re-activated it on my own by dialing *228. Once the automated programming completed I re-enabled iMessage and FaceTime and they both worked beautifully. Hope this helps!
The problem today was that the Apple servers were down. They are starting to come back up now.
I have the solution just go to setting/store/apple id/ view apple id/edit payment information and there put your phone number correct then save it and go back to imessage or facetime turn it off and back on and it will be done :)
im having the same problem. im trying everything and its not working. i dont know what to do.
i click on my imessage and it says get started so i press it. it asks for my apple id so i login. it asks that do i want my email adress to be the one that i use during imessage. i press next. then i goes back to the 2nd page whereit asksfor my apple id but everything is filled in. i try it several times but it still doesnt work.
i know i havent got my apple id and password wrong because it works when i install of the app store.
what shall i do?😕😕😕
just leaving my input on what worked. all i actually needed to do was to "reset network settings". I guess it all matters on how it started. Mine started from a sim card change. That triggered my whole mess.
In my case I had to try something different to make it work:

Common heard resolutions that didn't help:
What DID help:
Putting the SIM in a old (Nokia in my case) phone, and take a look at 'my phone number' in the addresbook (set the phone number if nessecary). This seems to update the phonenumber on the SIM, iMessage will activate fine hereafter.
Problem solved! If you have premium sms service deactivated enable it by calling the operator. And wait 24h then enable Facetime and Imessage and it should work again like charm!

Thanks Kildares, this was the issue on my wifes iPhone 4. The Mobile No was incorrect and as soon as i changed it both Facetime and iMessage activated straight away. 🙂
I tried everything and still nothing...
Turning off the cellular data & 3g worked for me.. This was for a 3GS with an inactive AT&T sim card
Darn auto correct!!! *turning of the cellular data & the 3G worked for me. This was on a 3GS with an inactive AT&T sim card
I've had the same problem and tried everything to fix it, then realised my phone wasnt on the right time zone. Now its fine, I just rebooted it and yay!!!
