All you have to do is make sure that the Push notifications are enabled.

Very easy. you go to TELUS. You tell them: "Hi, I would like to be able to send text messages to the UK". They might say that it would cost some money, like $10 to open it to the UK for 1 month. you don't need more. then go home and try again. Every time you press on "Activate" the phone tries to send an SMS to the UK (+44), and why you don't need more then a month? because this text actualy puts your US number in the list of numbers that have iMessage, so that instead of sending text regulerly you van send text over the internet to all people that have it. anyway that's the one and only way. it doesn't matter if you're in T-Mobile, AT&T or anything else.

Actually, in North America, Apple registers an iPhone for iMessage (and Facetime) by sending a text to a short code, not to a UK number. So you need to be able to send texts to shortcodes/special codes. This is why you can't register iMessage with Speakout, for example, because Speakout blocks shortcodes.

Hi, okay first off I'm in the bahamas, but never the less my iMessage is sayin "waiting for activtion", and secondly i can't uses my apple ID to log into icloud. Now i bought the phone second hand, and i've been trying to contact the guy who i got it from to log into his icloud account and remove the phone. Thus far i've been unable to make contact. Is there anyway round that? And how can i solve my iMessage issue? Thanks.

Hi, just had the same issue and found the solution was;
A) turn off wifi and make sure 3 g is working
B) send first iMessage via 3G
C) turn back on wifi
All now works, hope it does for you guys

Sad to say I am now also in the same predicament. This was working fine on my 4s with 5.1 when I first activated but now I had to do a restore and seem unable to get this done now as also on 5.1.1. Ive tried everything on all these forums including:-
- checking with provider, no restrictions on SMS in or out
- Lots of balance on my account
- Date/time issues make no difference
- Restore from backup and restore as new iphone no difference
- my mobile already listed in Settings --> Phone
- My info already specified in Settings --> Contacts --> My Info
- Apple id only has one number in it matching my mobile number
- Reboots via hold of power button as well as home + power button
- variations of 2g, 3g and wifi
- Email activation is fine, it is the mobile number that is not activating
- Setting the mobile Line1 on my SIM card to match mo mobile number
- Mobile number does show in Contacts above the search field
Any other suggestions?

Try to setup the SMS center number
Read this to know how to do that

Apologies, missed that one but already confirmed that this is setup correctly. I can send and receive SMS fine locally and internationally so don't believe that this is the issue.

Are you able to send SMS messages to special/short codes (like contests, or "Text 'Yes" to 4637 to vote for Kelly!")?
Some carriers (especially discount or pay-as-you go providers) do not support short codes. If you can't send a text to a short code, then it's likely you won't be able to activate your phone number for iMessage or Facetime. (At least in North America. I think in other parts of the world Apple sends the activation SMS to a proper phone number.)

I believe they are using a full number as my bill went up by 10USD the night I kept retrying and making changes, so chances are I paid for internaltional SMS. Ill find out when I get my bill in a few days. I can use short codes though at least local ones.

This problem is solved for me, with some help from the carriers. At last
Let me describe my situation once again.
I am from India, where the official iPhone carriers are Airtel and Aircel.
I have two prepaid connections - One from Airtel and one from Reliance GSM
Whenever I try to activate iMessage from my Reliace SIM, it shows activation unsuccessful, the the receive at shows my email ID only.
But whenever I try activate it using Airtel SIM, it activates just fine. But since my primary connection is the Reliance one, I wanted it to get activated for Reliance.
I have tried every tweaks/restore etc mentioned in this discussion, but nothing worked.
This does not require any jailbreak/restore. Just a little help from the carrier.
For all reliance GSM customers in India, you can just try to activate in again. I think they have solved it for all customers.
I was almost lost hope of activating imeesage on Reliance. But then one of my friends bought a new iphone (4S). He had a docomo connection, and he also had this same issue. But using his contacts in docomo, he enabled some trace in his connection, and found out that the phone was trying to send SMS to a UK number (short code), which is blocked by their RA team.
This is that magic number : 00445773142076
So from him, I got the number. I raised a complaint with Reliance.
The complaint had nothing about imessage, but it said: "I am unable to send international SMS to the number 00445773142076, even after having sufficient balance and an active SMS plan"
So they have done some 'unblocking' and called me this morning and asked to try again 'sending sms to the same number' . I went to settings and activated imessage and facetime/ Thats it !!!!.
A big thanks to Reliance GSM support for the quick solution.
For anyone on Reliance GSM in India, just try activating it now.
For others, log a complaint with the carrier that "you want to send SMS to the number 00445773142076.

i have the same issue since two month and after i try everything like reset the setting and turn it off then on and restore my phone itry every thing but no use still not activate . i found the solution it is the cellular data setting
u just need to go yo setting then general then network then cellular data network and check ur AP setting if not u need to insert it manually after that it work 100% even my other iphone can not get the phone number in (my number) but it work after doing this the reason is that some operator dosont provide the data setting automaticlly.

My husband and I are also experiencing this problem at the moment. We have just been overseas on a holiday, and on arriving back, imessage has not been working (no problems before we left, or while we were away). I am able to use imessage with my apple id email address, but not my phone number. When I check the apple ID, area, it says it is trying to verify a phone number that I DO NOT have, and even has a completely different country ID. I can't seem to delete this phone number from my iphone, and it does not appear in my apple ID settings as a phone number associated with my account.
How do I delete this number, or change it to be the correct number?? I think this is the reason imessage is not working as we have tried all of the suggestions above, and all suggested settings are correct.
