Q: My iMessage still says "Waiting for activation..."

Updated to iOS5 around noon today.  My iMessage still says "Waiting for activation...", someone told me there was a email I was supposed to receive.  I never got one.  How do I get Apple to resend said email, or more to the point - activate iMessage on my Telus iPhone 4?

no luck with this new option also... i did everything as i told above... only difference i have now is : after formatting the device, and resetting all settings, the old no. is removed and now i have ONLY e-mail present at both FaceTime and iMessage...sorry to say... the device works too inconsistantly with everyone... i have around 10-15 different solutions to the same problem... still nothing works for me, but everythign works for a set of users ... frustating...

FOR ALL THOSE USERS, who are having "Waiting for Activation.." and nothing happening... you can try this(at least you will get it activated but without the number in it)...

    1. Format it using iTunes(or re install iOS5 whatever)

    2. Set the FaceTime and iMessage ON (make sure they are on, leave it if still they are showing "Waiting for Activation...")

    3. with FaceTime and iMessage ON, reset the phone Settings (Settings -> General -> Reset -> Reset All Settings)

Done. After restart, you will see the FaceTime(faceLESStime) and iMessage(i do not message) activated... BUT WITHOUT YOUR NO. REGISTERED...

    at least console yourself...

    bhagiratha,

After you create the empty contact, did you go to General -> Settings -> Mail, contacts, Calendars -> My info

    and select this "test" contact?

I have my iMessage "waiting for activation" with "receive at" my email address - still I am able to send and receive text messages (just checked with my Dad's Nokia phone and he has only my phone number).

I have iPhone 4 and both FaceTime and iMessage can be reached by my email not the phone number - it's good. I have no problem with calling and receiving FaceTime as well as iMessage. In case of FaceTime it don't matter whether you can be reached by your number or email since in both cases you need a wi-fi - moreover, I deem it's even much better if you can be reached by email since you don't have to activate FaceTime each time when you change your number. As for iMessage, again, I see no problem with being reached by email and the same argument on the preference of email over number applies here as well - in my opinion .

This issue is fixed in iOS 5.0.1. Download the update and you should be fine. :)

This issue is NOT corrected in IOS 5.0.1.  I am still having this issue and it has been extremely aggravating trying to fix this.  I've been on the phone with Applecare and Verizon for hours trying to get this fixed to no avail.

I've tried EVERYTHING.  And I mean everything.  I have reformatted multiple times, reactivated, created a new temporary Apple ID, tried all the mentioned fixes on the boards I've found and nothing has helped.

One important point to all of this....

I WAS able to correct the issue by putting my iPhone active on a different mobile number which I have active on my Verizon Wireless account (have a family plan and changed the ESN online).  This worked!  The iMessage and Facetime activated just fine with the different mobile number.  I advised Verizon of this, but they don't seem to know how to go about correcting this.  In my mind, this has something to obviously do with my phone number because when I switched the iPhone back to MY number, the issue was back and I wasn't able to use my Facetime or iMessage using the phone number...just the email.

Any suggestions from those who know how IOS works in conjunction with a mobile number on an account?  Why does this work on one number, but not the other?  HELP!

    Do something APPLE!

I'm starting to think that this is SIM card related. On some polish forum I found info about activation problem with self-cutted micro-sims and the only fix for that was to go to your carrier and switch to original micro-sim. I'm not telling that cutting it self is making problem - I'm telling that really old sim cards (like mine 9 years old) may not support all the features since old sim cards are much simpler inside and do not provide all the information required by some features.

Since my carrier is offering free SIM replacement program I'm going to try this move.

Best luck to everyone with this annoying bug.

How long did you wait before you decided that it won't work with your number? In my case, after the upgrade to 5.0.1, my Apple ID was signed out and I just left my iMessage on "Waiting for activation..." and went on to do other stuff for a while. Didn't really time it but when I checked back it was fine. Perhaps you should've waited a bit more as it might not be as INSTANTANEOUS as you expect. Just my two cents.

Try changing your "Date & Time" settings to "Set Automatically"
