"Update Apple ID" for iOS 5... what?!

Ok, so I've spent all day with a phone stuck in restore mode and finally got it to install iOS5. I'm trying to just use my phone, but it's making me set up a bunch of things. I'm stuck at the Update Apple ID page. I have NO idea what this phone wants from me.

I've used the same apple ID since I got my iPod photo. And so I entered that information. Not for the Apple ID where it wants an email address I entered the address attatched to that apple ID. But it says that Apple ID is already in use and won't let me move on. What am I supposed to be doing here?! It's not very clear to me at all and I just need to use my phone as soon as possible.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Make sure you are logged out of the iTunes store on your computer.

Launch iTunes.

From the menu bar click Store / Sign Out

Restart your iPhone. Hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button down until the red slider appears. Slide your finger across the slider to turn off iPhone. To turn iPhone back on, press and hold the On/Off Sleep/Wake button until the Apple logo appears.

Try again.

Using an existing Apple ID with the iTunes Store and Mac App Store

Log on using appleID - online on your computer and go to account settings,

there was a "make apple ID your email address" button (or similar text) here..

I clicked this and apple reset my 'old' appleID to my 'new' appleID - my email address..

waited a few minutes then on the iphone used the back button to go to the first 'login in using appleID' screen

Use your newly updated ID here...

Worked for me (though excuse my incorrect naming of the buttons, doing it from memory!)

rONGIL,

I have the same problem, but haviung read your post I still cant work out what itunes wants from me. Can you explain exactly what steps you mean in your earlier reply?

For example, I cant find the place where i have the option to make my email address my Apple ID. What exactly am I logging into in order to do this?

APPLE: Someone hasn't thought this part through at all. I cant use my old Apple ID , and when I try to change it to my email address it tells me that address is already registered..........OF COURSE IT IS, ITS MY EMAIL ADDRESS THAT I USED TO SET UP THE ACCOUNT!!!

WHY CANT YOU JUST LINK MY ORIGINAL APPLE id TO MY EMAIL ADDRESS YOURSELVES!!

Sorry, this doesnt work for me, nor I suspect for a few million other people! The basic problem is that when you change your Apple ID and hit 'Submit' the page just refreshes, with out making the change. I've spent most of an evening trying to figure this out and watched the frustration posts build up!

I thought Apple wanted to make our lives easier - how many billions of manhours have been wasted on this problem to day, around the world!!

I've just found this thread which offers a workaround from dbeatle123 - looks promising - about to give it a go............

To solve this problem, got to a computer or a decide OTHER than your iPhone/iPad, that has Internet access. Go to https://appleid.apple.com and under "Already have an AppleID?" choose "manage your account". Log in with the apple I'd you're used to, and then on the page it brings you too after logging in, there should be an option something like "make apple I'd and primary email address the same" that's what you want to do. It'll basically replace your current AppleID with your email address, so you'd only have to use your email and your apple password.

Once you choose to activate that option, and you get verification that it's complete, you should be able to use your email and password on the Apple ID login screen for your phone, and finally be able to move on to the next step. I hope this helps.

It seems I more screwed up than anybody and I'm beginning to wonder if I will be able to fix this.

You see, after I created a new apple ID that I didn't want in order to get past the start up screw-up, I went to apple ID where I discovered my the password for my REAL apple ID needed to be reset, so I did that. THEN I went to iCloud on my iphone but discovered the ID I didn't want could not be removed without deleting the iCloud account, so that's what I did, thinking I could then log in with my regular apple ID. WRONG! I am in a screwy loop that says my ID needs to be verified. When I go to Apple ID and click "Verify", no email is sent to me to verify from.

Also, my 'username' for itunes doesn't work there anymore but luckily, my regular apple ID (the email address I use) does work. Unfortunately, the app store depends on my itunes username (which is permanently entered when it asks for my password), and no password works for that anymore, and when I try to do a password reset from apple, no email arrives. When I try to answer questions to get a password reset online, apple says the birthday date I entered does not match their records, even though it HAS to.

So now I cannot use iCloud, FaceTime, or download or update ANY of my apps! And, I cannot find ANY help for this anywhere online. I'm supremely angry by this and wish I'd NEVER updated my phone which is now SERIOUSLY screwed up compared to what it was before I got hornswoggled into the jackpot IOS5 has turned out to be.

Oh, and a call to apple support informs me it'll cost me mucho dinero to get any help from them. Thanks a lot, Apple!
