iPod Touch upgraded to iOS 5 is "waiting for changes to be applied"

OK, first it took several hours to actually get the update. Yes, it's understandable considering the millions of users attempting to update their devices on the same day. Well now mine has the update, but then I got hit with the XXGB of "other" storage that supposedly was cured by one of any number of restores. Well now my iTunes (10.5 running on WinXP SP3) can indeed see my iPod Touch (3rd gen, 32GB) and properly shows how much of each data type I have. The problem is now this ...

The iPod is asking me to re-connect the iPod to iTunes. I do so, it runs through the sync/backup procedure, then ends. However, the iPod is still acting like it hasn't been fully set up; in other words, it still wants me to connect to iTunes, like something isn't finished yet. On iTunes, the final step says "waiting for changes to be applied". Is it waiting on input from me, from Apple's servers, the great beyond? Any ideas appreciated.

Just updated my iPad to ios 5 and my iphone has been on GM for a few days now. Both synced normally earlier today but both are now having this exact issue (stuck on "waiting for changes to be applied"). I've tried several times, restarted both devices and the computer and let it go for about 2 hours while I watched a movie with no difference. Guessing is stuck on Apple's end, but why?

Well I have good news and bad news. The good news is I've got my iPod back and updated to iOS 5 and all my apps/media are intact, thanks to them being in iTunes already. The bad news is I had to do a full wipe on it, which cost me all my app data (all those Angry Birds levels need to be re-done). But, since I don't keep anything life-affecting on it, this ends the headache and doesn't really create that much of a new one.

RDew, it's good to know that it's working after the restore. I suspect I'll need to do the same with my iPhone 4. I'll lose my Angry Birds levels too, plus all the saved NY Times articles I never get around to reading. I'll copy over the handful of photos still on my iPhone and then do a full restore. Hopefully I won't lose anything in the process.

It's probably a good idea to do a full restore every so often anyway.

When I got to the point when it asks what you want to do (start as new, use an iCloud backup or an iTunes backup), I initially tried an iCloud one to see if it'd at least bring in my online purchases, then I could work with that. But since I hadn't actually backed up to iCloud, that didn't work. I just decided to start as a new iPod then re-synced it to my iTunes, so I got all my apps and media back, but not my app data.

Epilogue to my earlier posts:

After trying everything I could think of to fix this problem, I gave up and did a full restore. Then I spent an hour re-setting up my phone (mail accounts, logging back into all my different apps, many of which I forgot the password, moving the apps into folders, etc.).

The bad:

  • Setting everything up again.
  • I lost my Notes. I forgot to save them before doing the restore, and I can't figure out where they sync to.
  • I lost all my local data for any apps. For example, I had a lot of saved articles on NYTimes. Oh well. If you have a lot of local data for games or other things, this could be a problem for you.
  • All the non-standard words that the iPhone spell checker remembered for me over the past two years are now gone and will need to be re-remembered. I have a new appreciation for the iPhone's intelligent spell checker now that all my custom words are gone.

The good:

  • Everything works now, including syncs
  • I could swear the phone is faster now than it was on iOS 4.x; after originally upgrading to iOS 5, things were slow and glitchy. I must have just had a Vista-like upgrade. Some of this can probably be attributed to iOS 5 and perhaps some of it because of the restore flushing out any gunk that accumulated over the years.
  • It is probably a good idea to do a refresh like this every so often. I think I've been carrying around the same data since I bought a 3GS 2+ years ago.

This might help -- I had the same problem upgrading to iOS 5 on a iPhone 4 -- it got stuck on step 6 or 6 every time, waiting for change to be applied.

I remembered from a previous iOS upgrade that Voice Memos didn't sync quite right and tied up synching between old and new iOS versions of Memos... the solution then was to either delete the voice memos on in iTunes or on the phone (can't remember which).

So I deleted all my Voice Memos on the phone and in iTunes, and the syncs work fine now.

I had two issues that I was able to resolve this morning. Now sync goes FAST! Before this I was stuck at one of the two errors below:

"Waiting for items to copy"- On the music tab I had to check to "include voice memos" in the sync.

"waiting for changes to be applied" - I had to delete my "ipod photo cache folder" which was in the folder of photos I was syncing.

iPod Touch upgraded to iOS 5 is "waiting for changes to be applied"
