Oct 15, 2011 5:34 AM in response to christyyhby Polymath,This also happened to me,many searches in settings and Google,to no avail.
I then came to this site and posted a question,In the mean time I contacted my carrier 3 who spent at least an hour with me deleting iTunes on my computer and a factory reset on my iphone.( Scary Stuff ) .I did not lose any apps, music, photos nor message or call history.I didn't resolve this issue though untill I saw your effort and advice. Simply Genious, give yourself a pat on the back for helping me and countless others to enjoy their iPhones again.
PS, double tap in the lock screen brings up camera shortcut and iPod without unlocking phone. Also slide finger top to bot brings up appointments, messages calls, weather.Camera shutter now works in landscape mode via volume keys. Can You Tell I'm Excited.

Oct 15, 2011 10:19 AM in response to greenman83by Quoththeraven,It may work to turn iCloud on but it is FORCING us to merge our contacts & thereby choose function over privacy. I am not a paranoid person but the first thing this download wanted to do was track my location. There are also many other.bugs with this latest update. Anyone know how to do it without giving access to my list to iCloud?

Oct 16, 2011 6:52 AM in response to Comalies25by DrRob,Didn't work for me because I have MobileMe. So turned off iCloud and followed these directions to turn on MobileMe on 4S. Will deal with cloud later after moving MacBook pro to lion.
My problem with iOS5 on 4S was that I had not turned on MobilMe on phone. See these instructions:
Thanks to a message on this board, I found the solution. It involves turning on MobileMe calendar synching in Settings.
Explained in detail on this page:
http://www.apple.com/support/mobileme/
........
After you update your iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4 (or later), follow the calendar syncing setup instructions below.
For more information about iOS software, visit the iOS Software Update webpage.
To set up calendar syncing on your iPhone or iPod touch:
If you have iPhone or iPod touch with iOS 4 (or later) and MobileMe Calendar syncing is turned on, MobileMe Calendar is set up automatically.
1. On your iPhone or iPod touch Home screen, tap Settings.
2. Tap Mail, Contacts, Calendars.
3. Tap your MobileMe account. If you don’t see your account, make sure you’ve set it up on your device.
4. Make sure that Calendars is on.
5. If prompted, choose “Merge with MobileMe” to make sure the calendars already on your device are not duplicated.
6. Press the Home button, and then tap Calendar. Your MobileMe calendar is displayed in the Calendar application on your iPhone or iPod touch. It may take a few minutes to appear.

Oct 16, 2011 9:38 AM in response to Comalies25by asquaredflyer,I also couldn't edit contacts except favorites. As recommended, I went to iCloud, 'merged' my contacts in the cloud and voila. I got DUPLICATES of everything as well as names I don't even recognize. This well and truly is software that's not been tested properly.
Anybody have any solutions to the contacts issue that really will work, not duplicate and put in specious names?

Oct 17, 2011 9:59 AM in response to Comalies25by BaileyM,I tried this and it seemed to work. When you get a text message from the person, tap the "edit" button on the right upper corner. That seems to be the quickest way to edit existing contacts. Annoying but works. I spelled one of my friend's name wrong and just wanted to fix it and there was no "+" button.
