3.2 Cropping issue?

I just upgraded to 3.2 and every time I crop on a vertical image the default crop is a horizontal crop. Having to click the flip button and then resize the crop larger thousands of times is not going to work for me. Any ideas?

Thanks.

"Pro" is a marketing term, which is to say it has devolved to be an attempt to convey value without specifying a meaning (the holy grail of marketing is to get you to trade something of actual value for something of only apparent value). I expect all software I purchase to be de-bugged. Apple's Aperture 3.2 upgrade disappoints on that score.

Aperture is considered 'Proffesional'. Marketing aside most would assume it should be at a certain level of quality in terms of tools, stabilty etc.

I totally agree any software should be debugged. My annoyance is that the bug is with something so basic and so useful/used etc. What on Earth were the testers testing?

This is thoroughly irritating at this point. Does Apple even bother to test anything anymore before they throw it out there? Honestly, just look at the discussions pages! It's no longer, how do I do something but rather, why is everything completely screwed up every time it's updated?

On another more specific note: when a Straighten adjustment is applied and then you crop it as well there seems to be two layers (original and straightened) of images visible. This must be new right? It's both somewhat logical but completely distracting at the same time. Plus your usable screen real estate shrinks down. Is this a bug or a feature? I don't remember it being this way and I use Aperture for hours every day.

Please every submit this vertical crop issue to Apple: http://www.apple.com/feedback/aperture.html

I seriously want to throw my computer out the window right now. I really hate to say it but 2012 might be the year for Lightroom 4. Stop ignoring your pro users Apple or at least admit iOS is your only concern and tell us to move on once and for all. So frustrated with this nonsense. Oh, bonus irritation: do the vertical image crop dance...ok now "apply" it..now change your mind on the crop and click on the box handle....OH GOOD HORIZONTAL AGAIN.

Hey Everyone. Feedback is not an effective tool for Apple to quickly change a bug. It's for longer-term fixes and or suggested new features.

The best way for Apple Engineering to learn about this is to call AppleCare, 800-275-2273. Politely ask to speak with Aperture Support. Even if you are told you are out of your free support window, please ask for an exception to speak with the Aperture team to document a reproducible bug that has been introduced with the latest version of Aperture released. If you can record a short screencast in quicktime, let the Aperture support team know, as they may want you to email it to them to get to engineering.

Called Apple support; they graciously chatted with me even though I'm long outside the 90 days support that goes with the software. They are aware of the crop issue and suggest that a fix will be forthcoming at some point although they could not comment on when that might be. They had me send them a copy of my system profile, for whatever that might be worth.

For anyone else who is experiencing this issue, it might be worth giving them a shout to add your information to their data-set.

As an aside, trashing the plist did nothing for me.

I called as well and they knew exactly what I was talking about. This really needs to be updated soon, it's quite unacceptable. They recommended lifting/stamping vertical crops but that isn't very effective at all when you're working on a mix of vertical and horizontal images with a mix of color adjustments that need to be lifted/stamped as well. And don't even think of adjusting the vertical crop you've stamped anyway because it will flip right back to a horizontal crop!

Having the same cropping issues here since upgrading to Aperture 3.2 on my Mac laptop and desktop. My images turn to an angled position when I try to use the cropping tool. What I have noticed is that the problem occurs with a copied or duplicate image file and not the original! Anyone else found this issue? Until there is a fix, I will be using Photoshop and/or Lightroom.

Despite not hearing anything from Apple (as usual...) I did get a survey request regarding my call to Apple so this is how I answered the last question (I could have gone on for paragraphs...)

Is there anything that AppleCare could have done differently to improve your support experience?

Yes. Based on the general outrage expressed by users in just about every category of the Discussions pages it's time to hire more engineers and less Telephone Support operators. Severe bugs or dropped features are everywhere and people are not happy to put it mildly. I've used Macs for about 12 years and I've never seen anything like this. I was calling about a small and thoroughly irritating bug in Aperture that support says they're aware of...but complete radio silence from Apple as usual. Apple should take note, http://blogs.adobe.com/lightroomjournal/

That is what actual communication looks like. More would still be nice but at least their users know there is a team letting them know they are actively working on things. This is the bug I'm dealing with in Aperture. It needs to be fixed immediately. https://discussions.apple.com/thread/3376312?start=0&tstart=0

I also have the same issue. Cropping in portrait-mode pictures, makes the top 1/4 of the picture dissappear and the cropping tool doesn't take into account the original image aspect ratio. Frustrating to say the least, I am waiting for Monday morning to call Apple support, they are closed for the weekend in my area (Greece).

Thank God I have a backup of my Library and the previous version of Aperture.
