Q: Greyed out songs on iphone after iOS 5 update

All I had to do was run my grayed out songs through that filter and it fixed my problems. None of the other steps were necessary for me, just the app. I've spent the last 2 hours trying to fix it and this is the only thing that worked for me! Thank you!

i'm starting to think that in my case, the issue is that my PC is old and it can't keep up with the process of adding the files.  i have my files stored on a NAS in a RAID config, and i had the grayed out issue again last night loading up a new 4s.  i rebooted my PC, kept chrome closed, and only opened itunes, and it loaded thousands of audio files without a hitch.

I just got a ipod touch 4 and had the same prob with greyed music and movies on it after doing a reset it was still there.

The way to fix this is EASY.

Click on your ipod or iphone in itunes.

At the top ya will see  SUMMARY APPS MUSIC MOVIES TV SHOWS BOOKS PHOTOS INFO

Go to each one and TURN OFF SYNC

Then the greys will be gone from your phone or ipod.

Was goin nuts trying to remove 3 videos that kept coming back and that cured it along with the greys

Here is the only way that I could solve the problem, and I tried everybody's good, but ultimately useless suggestions from this forum and others.

Backup all your important data, e.g. photos, notes, documents, i.e. things that can't be replaced.

Restore iPhone.

Before resynced iPhone with itunes make sure that the grayed out songs are deleted from itunes, and any other iDevice (you may need to make list of the culprit songs before you restore your phone).

Now start from scratch: don't restore phone from backup, but set up as a new phone then sync phone, and get it just the way you like it again.

I know this seems extreme, but when I realized that the only things that I didn't want permanantly deleted were my photos (which are easy to back up) I thought, "why am I beating my head against the wall?" and I got rid of those **** gray songs once and for all.

This is what I did to fix mine.  Back when I first upgraded to iOS 5, I spent 3 days, trying every last thing suggested here to fix the greyed out songs, but I knew the only solution was to save what I could, wipe it out and start fresh.

Misery loves company, sorry.  I thought it was only me.  I have more tech issues than humanly possible.  I did utilize one of the original suggestions in this post. 

I had many greyed out songs, was very frustrated. 

I plugged in Iphone 4 and jumped up into menu in Itunes and stopped all syncing (photos, apps, etc) then checked sync all music

unplugged Iphone

then plugged back in

all songs were sync'd correctly

Only negative, I have quite a few duplicates, I did do the DATE suggestion on duplicates, but I synced all my music a few times from different locations in my back-up hard drive where I stored all my CDS, so many of the duplicates were synced the same day

Has abyone tried RINSE or Itunes Clean-up

Supposedly, they can eliminate duplicates.  I just don't want more issues

I'd even go into Itunes library and manually delete duplicates (1400 songs in my library), but I won't be plugging my phone in any day soon, really don't need grey-song syndrome again

Anyone know how to delete songs from your Iphone4?

So i fixed this error by going to the settings menu in the inphone and going to the itunes sync through wifi

and syncing.

But before i synced through wifi i added my music throught the autofill method on itunes.

I kept getting the grey songs but after i synced and went to what i mentioned above everything started to transfer to my iphone

Just open iTunes (not music) on your device go to purchases, and download the songs you want.

Yeah, i had that problem.... Try downloading your song from another site, i did it.... Problem solved for me

Well I've battled for days with this one, and tried many of the above suggestions. 

I told iTunes to sync selected playlists, abulms, artists, genres and then selected a few artists at a time

In doing this (and watching my iphone)I discovered that the process seems to be

- each album is added initially, using first track only (other tracks greyed out)

- as process continues, tracks are added

- for no apparent reason sync process stops, at a (repeatable) offending track

- all tracks not yet synced are left greyed out on the phone.

I tried unselecting the offedning artist, applying (re-syncing) which worked intermittently, but not for all offending instances..

What has 100% worked for me now is to run mp3 Scan & repair to identify offending albums/tracks with ??corrupted mp3 tags. 

Each one it identified I  deleted from library/iTunes and then re-ripped from CD or FLAC, and then added back into iTunes.

This has resolved all problems:-

A week ago I had partner & my iPhone 5's with no music.

After one week of trying, my partners phone eventually had a full library, after painstaking trial and error until I stumbled on the above. (yes, it has been a mammoth 100+ hours of waking time)

Now my own iphone is happily syncing all 6000 tracks from the same library with no hiccups, should be finished in around 4 hrs, a total of about 10 hours.

Is there a simiple fix for this? I had this problem on my 4 and just ignored it because I was upgrading to the 5. And once I got the 5 it's done the same thing. I have 870 songs with only 250 that are playable. I thought maybe it was itunes so I uninstalled and installed the 64 bit version. Still did not help.

I love my iphone but this is why Apple blows. To many limitations.

I was trying for days to figure it out, after deleting my music off my mac and restoring from time machine (last backup is from a year ago), and also using mp3 scan and repair I couldnt figure it out.

SO THEN

I backed up my iphone (no music on it) and then restored it to its factory settings, then added the latest backup and all my songs work!

Finally read through this thread. I have been having this issue for a very long time.  Did the unsync music thing and that only worked once. Just tried the kill the music app fix and it worked. Killed all apps and the music app then plugged iPod in and hit sync. Fixed. Thanks.
