Very frustrating, my friend has ios 5 and sent me a imessage and i am now having a conversation with him. However I cant start up a imessage conversation with anybody who i know has ios 5. including him. If i go to their contact details all it says it "send message" etc. If i click this, it goes to green bubbles rather then blue and sms's him. why?

I was having a similar problem too. Turns out it seemed to work after I sent a regular (green) text message to the ios 5 user. After I sent that it seemed to recognize that the user was an ios 5 user and the iMessage pre-text appeared in the text box.
I'm having the exact same problem. I can't initiate the iM convo but can reply if one is sent to me. My iM's are sent as MMS instead of text when I use email addresses as the contact. It's extremely frustrating!!! Can someone please shed some light on this?
Ok, I figured out the problem. Are you trying to iMsg an email address? If so, they person you are trying to iM probably does not have their email addy set up in the iMsg area. Go under settings, msg, and under receive at there is a list of where you can recieve iMs. If the other person's email isn't set up and only their number is, then you can not iMsg to their email, only to their phone #. I hope this helps!
I appreciate the help but it still is unresolved. See if I go to my contacts and find him, I have both his email and his phone number stored. If I hit send message it texts SMS. It should detect that he has iMessage I shouldn't have to go Into messages app, and under the new message > to "..." I shouldn't have to hand type in his email. I looked into what you said but on my phone it says "receiving iMessages at two locations" these includes phone and email. He messages me from his email that I have stored in my contacts. Could it be something to do with my service provider ? Rogers ?
was there any resolution to this problem? am facing the same thing.
Identical issue here. And, apparently related, Find My Friend also only works after I have sent a 'green' text to my iOS5 friend (despite it knowing he's an iMessenger). Unless I send a text first, it's always Location Not Available.
Totally frustrating. Anyone at Apple seeing this?

HI!!! my bf experienced the same problem. he cant initiate sending an imessage but he can reply to the ones i send. so we headed on to our provider and inquired about it. rep said its a network issue but i wasnt satisfied, we headed out and i was still bothered. one thing i noticed from the setup of my bfs imessage compared to my setup was his contact number was added as one of the addresses where imessage will be recvd,it was graded out(unchangeable) and my numbr wasnt on my phone. i compared our setup and the prob was from my phone, my setup. I didnt properly activated my imessage, it was on but underneath says "activation unsuccesful." so what i did was switched of my imessage and after a minute switched it back on, now HEADS UP! the rep we talked to advsed us that if accidently imsg was switched off/on it sends an international message and the costs depends on your service provider. moving forward, after switching it on beneath that says "waiting for activation" and after a minute.. VOILA! my number was added to the adreses where imsg will be received. asked my bf to initiate imsg and he can now 😀 check with your friends/family if they have succesfully setup-ed their imsg. hope this helps!

Same problem, and no it's not actiation unsuccesful issue.. so darn annoyed
