I can't log into iMessage; I get the message "Unable to verify email because it is already in use".

I have iOS5 installed on my iPad and iPhone. I can't log into iMessage on my iPad as I get the message "Unable to verify email because it is already in use". Can anyone help me solve this?

I was having the same problem with iMessages on my iPad 2. Were you using MobileMe before iCloud?

I migrated my MobileMe account over to iCloud on my MacBook Pro, iPad 2, and iPhone 4. Everything worked except for iMessages on my iPad.

The solution that worked for me was logging out of MobileMe, through System Preferences, on my MacBook Pro. Once I did that, logging into iMessages on my iPad suddenly worked.

I've found the answer to this (at least for me)!

The problem is I have 2 AppleIDs. One from before MobileMe which I use to make iTunes purchases (which is linked to my @me.com email) and the second is my MobileMe email address used for MobileMe syncing.

Each AppleID has to be linked to a separate email address. Because my iTunes Apple ID is linked and verified to my @me.com address. My @me.com AppleID address can't be verified.....quite confusing at first but starts to make sense once you get your head around it!

A simple solution I found was to simply sign the old email out of iMessage and sign back in with the new email. Step by step:

On your iPhone, go to Settings

Touch "Messages"

Touch "Receive At"

Touch the Apple ID at the top, and a window will pop up. Touch "Sign out"

Touch "Add Another Email"

Enter the email/Apple ID you want associated with iMessage, enter your password, touch "Sign In"

An iMessage note comes up asking which email you want to use. Touch your email address, and then touch "Next" in the top right corner. The new email should be set.

This worked for me -- I hope it helps someone else.

Also, as I just learned, even if you only have ONE email address linked to your Apple ID (which I do) and have had your Apple ID for some time, you have to RE-verify the email address. When any major changes are made such as the conversion to iCloud or whatever, Apple sends out a re-verification email to weed out old accounts, etc.

Anyway, my issue was resolved by calling Support. They then resent the verification email and it fixed both FaceTime and iMessage. I was getting the same "Unable to verify email because it is in use" error message in both apps.

It was a little more time consuming but when you call Support, just let them know you need the re-verify your email address.
