And if that doesn't answer your questions, the answer is "yes, yes" -- but you'll have to do a clean install rather than an "upgrade". I believe you can only go from Vista-> 7, but double check that. You sure the hardware can handle the jump from XP to 7?

A quick expansion on that, they both can use the same or different filesystem formats (for instance, XP might use FAT32 or NTFS... whereas Win7 will most definitely want to use NTFS at least). Not to mention FAT32 would cap your usable hard drive capacity because of mathematical limits (so would NTFS eventually, but these days, with FAT32, you'd notice it.... unless they use some addressing extention mode -- no need to even talk about that).

One definite thing is they will use two different boot loaders. The old using NTLDR and the new using the BOOTMGR/GUID booting uhm... they're just two different mechanisms and monsters -- but you CAN run Windows XP and Windows 7 side by side within your "Windows" partition-- that is a possibility. So you'd literally have a dual booting dual boot machine, haha... Choose OS X or Windows, then have to choose XP or 7. Good luck, buahaha... don't end up in the wrong version of Windows... it could ruin your week! (Official "wrong version" #1 is Windows ME, second official "wrong version" is Windows Vista. I was made to use both at differing points. God help me, I think it left lasting damage).

You actually have a Mac and want to use Windows? Why? LOL. Let's trade. I'm using Windows 7 and would much prefer it be OS X! Actually I was cleaning all of these orphaned folders, DLL files, leftover temporary garbage files and registry keys left behind as a result of using a PC for any period of time... In fact, my virtualized OS X Snow Leopard runs faster being EMULATED than the actual host OS itself! Bass ackwards, that one!

You NEED to put your computer information in your post or profile, model/year, OS, etc, as it's alot easier for them to answer you with specifics.

Simple answer is yes. But depends on what Mac your using and what OS you have on it.

XP to Windows 7 upgrade is an erase/install (clean/install) only. It "technically" can't upgrade the OS. Vista is the only one you can technically upgrade the OS.

And you can use the W7 Upgrade disk to clean/install with. Easiest way is to just install it and NOT update it, don't authorize it yet, then RE-install it again and then put the numbers in and update everything.

Start fresh and just have Boot Camp Assistant re-partition it for you. Just tell it the same size you had before and let it do the rest. Takes all of two minutes.

Boot Camp Assistant/Disk Utility does the partitioning. Windows installer does the formatting.

Windows HAS to reformat it, NTSF, etc,. Then install as usual. If you have a 64bit computer use the 64bit W7.

If your computer is happily running XP then don't worry about W7.

I have a PC, 2 laptops and a netbook all running XP.

I prefer XP to W7 as do millions of computer savvy users.

My computer are from 3 to 6 years old and have plenty of life left in them.

Wait until your computer dies of old age and then get a new one with the then current Wn.

Does it matter what version of Windows Vista I can use? I found Vista Ultimate, Home Basic, Business, Home Premium.

I want the cheapest one that will work fine.

I only want to run some basic Window's programs, nothing extensive like music, videos, pictures, games.

Also, I have heard that Windows Vista is junk compare to XP. Is this really an issue?

I have OS 10.6.8, 2GHz Intel Core 2 Duo.

Thank You

@Donna09, it's always best to start your own topic when asking about things that are off the main topic, you also can get a faster response sometimes.😉

As far as I know Service Pack 1 (SP1) for Windows 7 is the only one out now, so far anyway. You might have SP2 and SP3 mixed up with XP?

Windows 7 Home Premium is the cheapest.

There are always sales going on in the different online stores like NewEgg/ Amazon, etc,.

She can get Windows 7 extremely cheap when she actually gets to college!

When she get's to college have her go to the book store and or administrator and ask about the school discount (College only) that she can get from Microsoft.

If she is assigned a school email (some thing like "myDaughter@herschool.edu" that Microsoft requires) she can also contact Microsoft directly via their website for a discount also.🙂
