Unread mail badge not updating

Hi,

today I started using iCloud email.

I configured my new account on my iPhone 4 (iOS 5), on my iPad 2 (iOS 5) and on my Mac (10.7.2).

If I receive an email it is correctly pushed to all my devices and unread badge updates accordingly.

But if I read this email from my Mac badge continues to show I have an unread email.

I found this link:

I hope it is not true because it would be very annoying.

I posted in this same forum last night about this issue, but there were no responses save to suggest I reboot my iOS device, which did not help. Thanks for the link to the technical explanation of the problem.

In my case, I actually have to open the app and watch the read or deleted emails disappear from the screen, and then the badge updates. Another email being pushed to the device doesn't help, I don't think.

Not a deal breaker, but certainly a bit annoying.

I can't understand why Apple won't fix this. I have two mail accounts on my iPhone: me.com and gmail.com. If I read a gmail message on my Mac it disappears on my iPhone's mail badge (not always instantly, but always after a while). But read mails on my me.com address never disappear until I open the application. It's very frustrating!

I have a similar issue. I set up iCloud to auto filter most of my email into five different folders. My iPad 2 is set to the 'push mail' setting. Still, the folders in the iPad mail app are not updated untill I manually go into them on my ipad. Only then do they update and show unread email. With five folders it takes up to a minute to check all of them, which is very annoying. The OSX Lion Mail app, which is set up with the same icloud account, does not have this problem at all.

http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4083 seems to address this and say 'deal with it'. Disappointing!

Still happening. Only in Safari on iCloud.com. iDevices and Macbook Pro display correctly. Shift+Refresh doesn't work...must have been a fluke.

Now that I look at it, it seems that since the update (iOS6 and ML 10.8.2) the Safari version is counting the number of times I replied to a VIP. The number increases by one as an unread message appears. If I read but don't reply, the number goes down one. If I reply, the number remains the same. Still testing this theory.

Actually that article (http://support.apple.com/kb/TS4083)

implies if you have Push mail setup, those badges should update:

" If your iCloud email account is configured to use Push (in the Fetch New Data settings on your device), your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch will update automatically whenever you receive a new message in your @me.com or @mac.com Inbox."

Thats not happening on my iphone or ipad.

Wow. This *****. I set up iCloud on all of my iOS devices and my Mac for the whole family, and THEN discovered this problem.

Apple has got to fix this. The whole purpose of using cloud services across multiple devices using the same accounts is that they stay in sync across all devices at all times....including unread message counters!

This worked perfectly when I was using our Google accounts, so it does indeed work under iOS....except for when you're using iCloud to drive it all.

After making the full switch over to Apple from Windows and starting to use all of the Apple services, I'm definitely seeing many small and inconvenient kinks in their systems for some of the most basic things.

Geez, they've got to fix this.... :-(

Just re-tested this when using the same Google account on an iPhone 5, an iPad, and a MacBook Pro. It works perfectly and all the mail badges get updated correctly everywhere (albeit with a delay of a few minutes).

So this is a problem purely with iCloud and how it handles multiple devices using the same iCloud mail account.

Apple should fix it....or I'm guessing many people will switch right back to using Google for mail once they discover this bug. I will switch back if this isn't fixed....but since this thread has been around over a year, I won't hold my breath waiting for an Apple fix.

Just solved this problem with Apple. On all your iOS devices >preferences>icloud>storage & backup>

Turn on iCloud backup - this forces the sync

I had turned this off because I didn't want to use up storage but if I continue to backup to my computer it won't use up valuable space on icloud for this and my devices email now stay in sync.

Not a very clear way to solve this issue but it works.

Thanks Apple.

Thanks for the update mgraham3! I absolutely NEVER would have figured this out as a solution, so I'm glad you fought your way through it to find a solution that works.

I'll try it out when I get some free time this week because I would prefer to use my iCloud email account and turn off this forwarding arrangement that I'm currently using with Gmail.
