iMessage not working on iPad

Well I have successfully upgraded both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 to iOS 5 however the only feature I can not get to work properly is the iMessage. I can you iMessage on my iPhone no problem between other iMessage friends. The problem is being able to do like they advertise and be able to pick up on the iMessage from my iPad.

I did seem to notice that the iPad likes to use email addresses instead of phone numbers is that true?? If so does that mean on my iPhone I need to start an iMessage using email instead of phone number? I also tried sending an iMessage to my friends apple I'd email that has iOS5 and it's says he does not have the ability to use iMessage with that email (in red with ! Next to email and phone number). To me that seems to silly and not apple like. So I am hoping that I am missing a setting or something to get this fixed.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Caleb

So you have chosen to not use subject in Imessage in settings and you are getting a red exclamation mark and no delivery. Is that exclamation mark beside the name at top and the name is also highlighted in red?? I tried to replicate and I get this issue when I choose an email address that is NOT an Apple ID. You can only use Imessage between Apple devices with a correct Apple ID (or a phone number on an Iphone)

Have you Imessaged the same identical email address without subject and it was delivered prior to upgradimg to 6.0.1?? I think we need a little more information to help you. I have not upgraded my Ipad 3 to IOS 6.0.1 but it is 6.0 and it works fine--use it often.

I have the exact same problem with my wifi ipad 2. When I upgraded from IOS 6 to 6.1 my iMessages wont send, they work sometimes but not very often, the send bar goes 3/4 of the way then stops and I get the exclamation mark of doom! I also have an iPhone on the same itunes account also on IOS 6.1.

I have requested apple support call for 12.30 tomorrow. Problems with IOS 6 counts as an exception, so free support. I suggest you do the same, the more people that complain the better, squeeky wheel gets the grease and all that!

Good luck

Hi

I just spoke to apple, the router has not updated to work with the new software, so I rebooted the router, with the ipad off, put the ipad on again, then renewed lease in the router status page, re established my connection, I had to type in my router password again, and now it works fine.

Hope this helps.

You might have to tell it to forget this network then instruct it to connect to it again?

Good luck

I called Apple support and chatted with Eric. Since the 6.0.1 update iMessage stops at about 80% and just hangs.

1. He did want to charge me phone service because my I-Pads are 90 days old. The update 6.0.1 and iMessage not working is not a free pass. Eric said that I could:

1. re-start my router

2. Log out of imessage and then back in.

3. Do a complete restore

When I told him that since the update my iMessage works for about 10 minutes a day he said "oh, it's working" and sounded cheerful :)

I really do not want to restore my ipad but may not have a choice. I have restarted the router, logged off iMessage, reset my apple ID password, re-booted, tuned off my iPhone and iPad. If anyone figures this out please let us know. In the mean time I will not update anything on our 3 iPads. I am thinking Surface but I am sure it has problems too.

I have never found talking to the help desk of any use. Not only do they not have any link with the engineering side ("use iTunes feedback") since ios 5 and again with ios 6, my contacts have been a total mess. Help desk doesn't seem to know how to recitfy the issues. All stemming from my stupidly joining iCloud.

On buying a new laptop, I suddenly found I had a new email address which uses one of my passwords as the address. How stupid is this? Obviously, I am not intending to use it.

Following this thread, I am glad I have not signed up to iMessage.

Just wanted to let you know that my iMessage and FaceTime did not work on my iPad 3. I tried all the suggested tricks but couldn't get signed in. I went the the apple store at the weekend and the bloke dealing with me had never come across it before. He couldn't fix it so ended up giving me a new iPad and now it works perfectly. If any of you can get to a store might be worth you going in.

I have had intermittent problems with Facetime, iMessage & Mail on a new iPad 2 wifi only with iOS 6 the downside is they don't work most of the time, then they do for no apparent reason. I have tried

- rebooting in all the various different ways

- loging in and out of facetime and rebooting in various combos

- turning imessage on/off and rebooting in various combos

- turning the subject field on and off and rebooting etc

- resetting the wireless network settings

- using the Google DNS setting

Short of throwing it against a wall when my 13 year old cheerfully told me I must be doing something wrong and to let her try, I've tried everything Google can throw up.

I thought that there must be a vengeful God who had listened to me discussing the potential of the Windows 8/Mobile/Surface compatibility potential and spoke to my dearest saying 'Go buy an iPad, it's just what he wants'.!!

However, last night while we were trying to get iPhone 4S to talk to iPad 2 across a distance of two feet by a lucky coincidence we tried the iphone option of resending a message as an email. Initially to no avail, then the message would appear when I manually opened the email app or navigated to it once open.

Checking the settings I had 'Push' turned on, more Googleing revelas there is yet another issue (eat your heart out Microsoft) with iCloud and 'Push'. Verified the problem by sending repeated emails to combinations of open and closed mail apps, rebooting etc.

Turned push off, and then back on and lo and behold mail poured from the skies, Facetime and iMessage start working.

Validated the approach with a reboot and mail not working on reboot, iMessage and Facetime not working again. Push off and on and hey presto.

In hindsight this is what happened on day 1, after hours of assuming that Apple products aren't simple and straightforward out of the box and the answer must lie in a discussionn forum somewhere I think we must have decided to try the mail app. No sooner had we got mail working than Facetime and iMessage were working too. Just didn't connect the events at the time.
