iMessage not working on iPad

Well I have successfully upgraded both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 to iOS 5 however the only feature I can not get to work properly is the iMessage. I can you iMessage on my iPhone no problem between other iMessage friends. The problem is being able to do like they advertise and be able to pick up on the iMessage from my iPad.

I did seem to notice that the iPad likes to use email addresses instead of phone numbers is that true?? If so does that mean on my iPhone I need to start an iMessage using email instead of phone number? I also tried sending an iMessage to my friends apple I'd email that has iOS5 and it's says he does not have the ability to use iMessage with that email (in red with ! Next to email and phone number). To me that seems to silly and not apple like. So I am hoping that I am missing a setting or something to get this fixed.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Caleb

Okay, i found the solution to some people's problems...

"iPads do not have the native ability to send SMS messages so it doesn't matter whether you have a cellular iPad or not. You are actually sending iMessages to your friends with iPhones. To be able to send text messages you will need to use a third party app. There are several in the App Store."

I did not realize that iMessage only works with people that have apple devices, including iPhones.

Very disappointing Apple.

I forgot to mention its also immediate--unlike email-- and you can see if its delivered or not--and also see when the othr person is replying. One needs to remember its a tablet, not a phone. Many of us use it to have realtime conversations, including photos and videos, but it IS Apple and they provide the ability OUTSIDE cellular. Other phones, tablets (android, etc) do not have the ability to receive or send Imessages, only texting, If you want to text, buy yourself an inexpensive 3rd party app from the store.

Apple is the most expensive and you'd think the most sophisticated tablet out there and I have no doubt that they are more than capable of implementing it. Apple enjoys exerting total dominance over its hardware and the software that runs on it. That's the reason we can't view flash animations. Using their servers should not be considered a privilege. They would not offer it to the millions of users out there if they were not profiting billions of dollars. We PAY for every single "perk" Apple offers.

SMS and Imessaging are different formats, the first dependent on a phone number, etc. You can do both with an IPhone but you need a 3rd party app on a tablet (which will assign a phone number) as you do for many things on an Apple device (same as Android devices). There are FREE 3rd party text apps in store.

i have to say I don't understand people buying an "expensive" (as you say) device and not knowing its capabilities. I'm no Apple apologist, have worked with Windows on my PCs since it was introduced but have had an iPad since the first week of IPad One and feel I've gotten value for every penny i spent. its important to explore apps to extend how you can use it. If you find it doesn't suit your purposes and use then I suggest you sell and buy one that would work better for you.
