iMessage not working on iPad

Well I have successfully upgraded both my iPad 2 and iPhone 4 to iOS 5 however the only feature I can not get to work properly is the iMessage. I can you iMessage on my iPhone no problem between other iMessage friends. The problem is being able to do like they advertise and be able to pick up on the iMessage from my iPad.

I did seem to notice that the iPad likes to use email addresses instead of phone numbers is that true?? If so does that mean on my iPhone I need to start an iMessage using email instead of phone number? I also tried sending an iMessage to my friends apple I'd email that has iOS5 and it's says he does not have the ability to use iMessage with that email (in red with ! Next to email and phone number). To me that seems to silly and not apple like. So I am hoping that I am missing a setting or something to get this fixed.

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Caleb

OKAY, this is likely my last comment! For the last 6 days everything has been perfect. FaceTime and iMessage work on both my iPhone 4 and iPad 2. I have also upgraded to IOS 5. I changed NO DNS numbers. I took my iPad to my sports club and used their wifi connection. FaceTime and iMessage worked immediately. I came home and tried it on my network and Voila, success! All has worked seamlessly since.

The first time I tried another network all was fine until I needed to reboot my iPad, then the same problem occurred. I am hopeful this will continue working. I've not needed to reboot to "test" it out and honestly don't see the need to monkey with it!

I was having this problem as well. I thought I had it licked, but...

(iPhone 4 and iPad 2, FWIW)

Go to settings, wifi, and look for your wifi network - it's the one with a check mark.

Tap on the blue arrow just to the right of your network. This will bring up the network settings.

Tap on DNS, deleting everything, periods and all, and type in "8.8.8.8"

I did this on both my iPhone and iPad, and I restarted both.

Now if I sent a message from iPad to a contact's phone number they both got the message, and replies came to both devices. I was worried that it would show up as a new conversation on my phone, but it didn't, just added to the old one.

It worked for a bit, I messaged people, they messaged back and both devices got the reply. About ten minutes later a friend texted me and I didn't get it on my iPad.

If I send it from my iPad, they get it, and my phone is updated too. If I send it from my phone, they get it, and my iPad is updated. But my iPad never receives anyone's replies.

I haven't EXTENSIVELY tested this, just with a friend's phone and my own, just presenting my experience for the trouble shooters out there. =)

Hope a definite fix comes out soon, though I like the new OS enough this one little rough patch is forgivable. =)

THank you Blueboy322, turning off Read Receipt & Subject has solved this problem on

My ipod touch. SEND button works everytime on all phone numbers & emails updated to latest software - indicated by blue cloud by name & device address.

This does not mean they have actually started using iMessage yet, but it is ready & waiting for them to find your messages

The red indicator beside contact means they have not downloaded latest Apple/iTunes update. Do not forget to tell them to shutdown all open applications on computer when downloading & installing, this MEANS pausing your security system (firewall, virus checker, etc) for approx 45 minutes otherwise it will just TIMEOUT.

SHould I leave my WiFi DNS set to 8.8.8.8.8.8.4.4.? Or should I change it back? Can anyone remember what previous setting was?

I have had the same issue for a couple of weeks now and just resolved it by accident as follows - seems there is an issue with the way the AppleID deals with the 'mac.com' and 'me.com' formats.

Follow these instructions on your iPhone FIRST before your iPad

1. On your iPhone, in 'Settings' open 'Messages'

2. Scroll down and click on 'Recieve At'

3. Under the 'You can be reached for messages at:' you will see just your phone number listed.

3. Click on 'Use AppleID'

4. You will be asked for your AppleID - type your full AppleID in the OLD APPLE EMAIL FORMAT ie xxxxx@MAC.com

5. Then, on the the next screen when it asks what email address you want to use, type the same AppleID BUT IN THE NEW APPLE EMAIL FORMAT ie xxxxx@ME.com

6. Click OK - when you go back to the 'iMessage' screen, you will see that now under the 'You can be reached for messages at:' you will now see both your phone number and AppleID email listed.

7. Go back to the 'Messages' screen and ensure iMessage is turned on at the top of the screen.

8. Reboot your iPad - and the settings will be picked up automatically

9. iMessage will now work on both your iPhone and iPad

This should work first time, and you will get a confirmation email from Apple shortly afterwards.
