I have a solution!! I'll post it here because it's fairly simple.

As was alluded to earlier in this forum or other forums is that it's a MobileMe transition problem with the passwords, they aren't coding correctly or blah blah blah whatever it is that's wrong with it. It's not easy to change your iCloud password, so you have to go here:

https://appleid.apple.com/cgi-bin/WebObjects/MyAppleId.woa/

or appleid.apple.com and it redirects.

Sign into your account under "Manage my account" and reset your password to a new one, it can be similar just not the same as the current. Make sure it's your @me account and not your iTunes Apple ID (if they are separate).

Optional step to help reset everything: Sign out of iCloud through your System Preferences. It'll ask you to delete contacts, calendars etc. You should be able to delete everything because it's still backed up on the cloud. Do all that, delete the email account in Mail. Then sign back in and reinstate everything with the new password. Go to Mail and add a new iCloud account with the new password. Empty the Cache in Safari. Log back in via the website. Go to your iPhone settings and change the password under the iCloud setting (not Mail). That'll reset everything.

That should work to reset your password everywhere, resync all of your data and get you collecting your email again.

Pass it on.

William, I would encourage you to call Apple Phone Support and ask them to reset the password for you. When I talked to them about this issue, the Apple rep said that resetting your own password doesn't always fix the problem, but that when Apple puts your account in troubleshooting mode and resets your password on their end, then it does tend to fix the issue, and permanently (in his experiece, he said, the issue doesn't recur once they do this procedure).

Obviously I'm just passing on what they told me, and others may have had different experiences, but for me this worked and it hasn't come back. Good luck!

After speaking to an advisor, i was told i need to pay for the relevant covering plan to go any further with my case. I have reset my password, and i still can't get my emails. On my phone, it shows a tick when i type my password in (to reassure me that its the correct password), yet when i try to check my email the error message reappears! My laptop just says the error message stated, and when i log on to iCloud online, it wont allow me to access mail, it just crashes. Not happy!!!!

p99-imap (etc) is still down, or newly down for me, starting March 22, and I'm wishing the cloud would clear at this point. I hear from apple tech hq that it is their server down...while I thought the whole point of cloud technology was to cascade in the event of server failure. I think I am going to use another mail app, much as I was glad for the new stealth of Lion...and i would HOPE this stuff gets figured out before Mountain Lion arrives.
