Trouble setting up iCloud

When I go to iCloud in System Preferences to set it up, I encounter an issue when entering my Apple ID information. My Apple ID is two separate words and it only allows you to enter a single string, so I can't actually enter my Apple ID. Do I have to change it or what?

MacBook 2.4 GHz / Black 160GB Classic, Mac OS X (10.7)
