iTunes 10.5 Freezing on Windows 7 - Cannot sync or update phone

I have an iPhone 4 and I wanted to update to the iOS5 but I have to update my iTunes to the newest version. Now my iTunes freezes any time my phone is connected. I cannot sync my phone and I decided to just try to do the update but after it was done downloading the update it started to do the phone backup and stayed on the backup progress bar for over 45 mins when I decided to just give up. Before that I had tried syncing my phone over 10 times and each time it froze. I had to use the task manager to close iTunes because it wouldn't close. I have tried to repair iTunes with no luck. I don't have my music backed up anywhere so I don't want to uninstall iTunes, plus I don't want to lose my old phone backups (most recent last week) in case something goes wrong in the update. Has anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know of a fix?

If I do manage make to the summary screen for my phone and click on the sync button I get stuck on the "Backing up" bar but not the progress bar its the barbershop type bar. It never moves on from there. I uninstalled iTunes and reinstalled it and it's not working. I'm thinking about restoring Windows to yesterday before I updated iTunes. I know that won't fix the problem but at least I'll be able to sync my phone one more time. This is so frustrating.

Same problem.

Updated itunes to version 10.5.

Connect the iPhone4 and the backup freeze.

I can't open the itunes store page (remain blank) but i can upgrade the apps!

I have unistalled itunes and the relative components with the Apple procedure (there are 6 programs to unistal in a specific order) then i have reinstalled iTunes but nothing changed.

The strange thing is that there is a problem with itunes.exe that occupies about 50% of the cpu and Applemobiledevice.exe that occupies about 25% of the cpu.

So the pc became very, very hot!

It's very frustrating that no one from Apple can answer.

I think i'll try to format the PC but I'am very ****** off!

No solution here, either. However, I think this is a problem that is more common than you think. I've downloaded iTunes 10.5 on my son's laptop (Vista Home) and my old desktop (Windows XP) and both work flawlessly. Download iTunes 10.5 to my laptop (Windows 7 Home Premium) and NOTHING. I get the exact problem you have. Heck, I don't even need to have the iPhone installed in order for the program to crash.

Apple phone support sort of gave up when they couldn't come up with a fix. I think there will be an update coming that will fix this problem...give it a few days.

RIP, Mr. Jobs.

Hi guys,

There is a solution on another thread, I don't know if you've seen this from someone called xeta.

Basically:

Start --> Programs --> Accessories (Right Click on Command Prompt) --> Run as Administrator

then type in:

netsh winsock reset

The restart the computer.

I don't think this has worked for everyone but it has for many, including me.

I'm having the same issue with both my iPhone 4 & iPad. Both freeze up in the backup phase of the iOS install. I have let them run for 12+ hours and it never changes. It also freezes up iTunes and my entire PC. I have Win7 Home Premium and 64bit iTunes on a new laptop (core i7/8G RAM). I tried Timda's recommendation and no change. This is very frustrating - I have uninstalled & reinstalled multiple times with reboots and nothing helps. Seems like a buggy iTunes/iOS5 release - I think I'm just going to have to wait for them to fix the updates.
