Q: Ios 5 + Home Sharing + IPAD

Hey, very strange problem here on my side. Running Itunes on a Mac Mini with all the latest updates (Lion) and Homesharing switched ON. My TV Show library looks like the first pic attached. When I open the VIDEO App on my IPAD, I can't see all my shows (especially the bought ones) - see second pic attached. It just looks like a big mess. Any idea, what is going wrong here?

P.S: Working well for Movies and Music Videos (No Artwork for those types).

I believe this works, for iOS 5.0.1 anyway. It is only Artist and Show that need to be populated, I have set them to the same value, but I am not even sure this needs to be the true. It seems for each different Artist=>Show combo you will get an entry under the TV Shows on your iOS device.

I have not done all episode number or episode IDs (many are blank and they are not unique) and it appears to work fine. I thought all entries for a show needed the same album art work, but this is not even the case. Muliple art (different for each series of a show) seems to work fine.

Occassionaly the wrong art work for the show or an episode appears, this does not seem to be fixable.

Related to this, which you may find useful. You can set up playlists in iTunes for a series. You cannot access these from iOS-Videos but you can access them from iOS-Music. Great for random playlists for the kids or a playlist from a show with multiple series.

Thanks everyone for the tips.  In my case I had various bits of info filled in (like episode IDs) but had this problem until I followed the suggestions to fill in the "Album" field for the TV show episodes.  Doing that got the shows to display properly on devices running iOS 5 or 5.1.  Interestingly, iOS 4.x devices didn't need this to be set to display correctly.

Matching Artist & Show did the trick for me as well, no more repeated episode icons, however now the episodes appear out of order?  When I select one of my episode icons and it goes to the episode splash page the episodes are not in sequence:

    5

    11

    3

    7

    8

    10

Since i updated to ios 5.0 and since then 5.0.1 on my IPad. My movie posters were showing up wrong, but if I selected one, the correct poster and information would display.

I had been deleting my movies from itunes and re adding them to fix the problem, but it would reoccur. I even tried restoring my ipad once, it worked for about a day.

Today I found this post and it makes me feel like I was pulling my hair out for nothing. On my ipad, I went to Settings/Videos and changed my username, openned the Videos app, and then went back to settings and corrected my login name. This is a way better solution than re adding all of my movies.

    Thanks for the help.

Paying it forward; thanks for all of the breadcrumbs in these forums.

After much experimentation, here's how I got it to work for me:

Turns out my results were still erractic.

    It seems to be:

    Info: Name, Album, Artist

Video: Show, Season, Episode Id and Episode No.

Blanks of any think seem to give you duplicates and incorrect art. I have distinct IDs this way by the nature of how they recorded so I can't confirm this is required. You have to do your whole library, it will not work for only the correct entires. I would follow the link above for the method that worked......

Before, if I "deleted" my entire video library and opted to "Keep Files", exit iTunes, start iTunes, and then add the Movies folder back in, that was working.  Alas, that no longer worked, but typing in an incorrect password on my iPad under Videos did the trick this time.  Hooray, they actually match and I no longer have guess!!!

I have so many TV Shows not showing up on my iPad from my Home Share. I've labeled all my TV shows, seasons, and made sure the label option was "TV Show" and not "Music" or "Movie" soooo strange.....

This worked for me. iPad 2 (iOS 5.1) with the shared movies cover art mixed up and some movies not showing up.

    Thanks.

I'm having the same issue. I have purchased TV Shows (Family Guy and Simpsons) without titles. I have movies that I have made on iMovie have titles and some that do not with the same type of image. The titles get hidden behind the image. I don't know what else to do to fix it.

This worked perfectly for me! Many thanks. It doesn't even take very long at all to correct as you can copy and paste a lot of stuff if you are careful.

    Cheers,

Also having this problem! I ensured that Album and Album Artist were always the same, as well as giving all episodes in a single season the same Album designation, i.e. "The West Wing (season 1)". Under the video tab I filled in all the fields, using the actual title in the Episode ID field. Despite filling in both the Episode Number field as well as the Track Numbers for every episode correcly, on the iPad using Home Sharing the episodes came back in alphabetical order based on the information in the Episode ID field under the Video tab. Ridiculous.

But by placing the episode number (01, 02, 03 etc.) in front of the episode title in the Episode ID field under Video (while preserving the title in the Name field under the Info tab, as that is the information used to actually give a name to the episode on the iPad), the order of the episodes finally matched the chronological order (episode sequence). So now they are all in order now, with correct episode names (without the number in front of the names) in the correct season and so forth. Worked, but was quite time consuming.

Does anybody else get tired by all this? The Photo App has similar problems: everything out of order with no way whatsoever to put my own files and pictures in the order I want. It is quite infuriating. Where is the vaunted seamlessness, ease of use, intuitiveness and beauty the media and fan boys salivate over constantly? I'm sorry... but what is beautiful or intuitive about arranging episodes of media I purchased legally not in chronological order and in an order that does not even correspond with the data in iTunes, with no way whatsoever to correct the problem except via tedious and time-consuming run arounds??????? Perhaps a focus group or two would not kill Apple. All these little problems are really irritating: death by a thousand paper cuts. Samsung products start to look attractive, I couldn't care less about their legal squabbles.

But all in all... rich world problems.

OK, so I had the same issue with gray boxes and rectangles instead of art work for videos only on my IPad.

Artwork works fine in ITunes on my iMac and Apple TVs but wacks out on random videos on my ipad air.

After too many hours and calls to Apple Care, I found through experimentation that Apple had changed the artwork formatting requirements on the IPad.

    • Now movies must be portrait (The size and proportion for movie posters from Google works fine.)
    • TV shows must be square. (This is what all my videos were and worked fine before)
    • Music Videos must be 16x9 (when not 16x9, i get the dreaded gray rectangle)

After working for hours with this, I was able to consistently get the artwork to display on the IPad after I changed the artwork in itunes on my IMac to fit these perimeters. Then just synch the IPad and wait for it to update.

I've read about people discussing meta data etc, but changing the artwork to fit the above perimeters has worked each time I synch to the IPad.

To me this is a big bug, and Apple should have retained both formatting options when they changed it but they didn't.
